We rent at the Retreat after hearing all of the great reviews on this site, moving from out of state. I thought it was a little fishy that they wouldn't show us a unit before signing a lease, but we were desperate and needed to sign a lease that weekend.
We have reported numerous problems with the apartment with no resolution (one being a crack in the window that has never been fixed, reported less than a month after move-in). We also notice that nobody likes to clean up after their pets, a big problem in my book! Most other complexes I have lived in, people were courteous enough to pick up after their pets and some even let their pets off lead to have them do their business.
We see people moving nearly every weekend, both in and out, so it seems like there is a good bit of turnover here, regardless of what the management tells you on the tour. It's not a terrible place to live, but we definitely are not renewing our lease, we had better apartment management when we were still in college!

The new manager has been here since October 2007. You reported your broken window within 1 month of moving in, so the new manager has never been informed of the window being cracked. Try bringing it to his attention and I am sure you find it gets fixed.
Every person who wishes to view an apartment is more than welcome to view anything that is ready to show. If there is nothing to show you should be offered an online virtual tour of the floor plans you like.
Maintenance walks the grounds in the morning picking up trash and animal droppings in an attempt to keep the property as clean as possible.
As far as turnover goes you will see just as many people move in as moving out, that would make sense. If they were moving out only, I would think you should have a reason to be concerned. Talk to you neighbors and I am certain you will find more than half of them are buying homes.

With all due respect, I have reported the problem since and other problems with the insistance that it would be fixed that day. However, when I return home, there is no note left saying anyone had been in my unit that day (which is standard procedure in every complex I've lived in) and the problem persists. We have given up on even making requests, as everything is marked on our move-in report anyway.
Also, this is the fourth state I've live in, and in each of those states, I was able to view apartments on the market as long as the renter was given 24 hours notice of entering their apartment. A virtual tour does not give you an idea of the construction of the building and unit, only a floor plan, which you can easily find on the internet.
As for the animal droppings, if you have maintenance cleaning up the droppings, they aren't doing their job! I've tracked multiple piles for weeks with them degrading to all sorts of shades of colors. Also, there should be an extra trash bin in the complex, as the one that is there currently is overflowing by the end of the weekend and creates a noxious odor on that side of the complex.
As for your final comment, I highly doubt that more than half of the people leaving the complex are moving into homes, given the state of the economy at this point. We could easily afford and own a home, but will be moving into another complex.
Finally, as another user posted, there is a problem with the key entry, as you need to push very hard to get the code to work. Plus, the exit key pad has been broken and hanging for over 24 hours. The entry gate is also broken and looks like it has been hit by a car (once again). This seems to be a common occurrence and is highly annoying when one of the perks noted about the complex is being gated!

The whole time I lived there I never once say a maintance guy pick up any dog poop. What the manager wrote there is a lie. I saw them step over it when it was in the middle of the sidewalk for days on end. If the maintance crew and manager so good at keeping up with repairs then why do you have to make new codes to fit around all the broken numbers on the front gate? Also there were a whole lot of empty apartments there, not from turnover, just empty. This place and most important management is a joke.

This is a lame argument, it shouldn't be the responsibility of the maintenance crew or management to clean up after YOUR dog. The tenants of this complex should be responsible and civil enough and considerate of others to clean up their own ----. I hate people who want to have a pet but are not willing to take care of them.
