Not Worth The Rent!!!

We moved in thinking the rent was do-able for a great location. When we first saw the apartment (before any of our stuff was in) the walls had not been painted at all (there was a big greasy stain by the breakfast bar) and there was food stuck in the carpet downstairs. Upstairs, you could still see indentations where the last people's furniture was. There were roaches in the kitchen, which was not cleaned before we got there. We addressed all these problems with the staff before moving in. They promised to clean the place, send pest control, and they said they'd repaint after we moved in ("No one gets their stuff up the stairs without leaving scuffs... move in and we'll paint afterward"). Needless to say, none of this happened. The bugs got worse (okay, seriously, why are roaches in my upstairs bathroom, where I keep my toothbrush and contact lenses'''') and the management ignored our requests for pest control. A leak in the downstairs bathroom was never fixed, and the sheetrock got all wet and saggy, with paint bubbles. The only "fix" they ever gave us was to scrape off the wet and repaint. Nice job. They also left paint scrapings everywhere. One of the cabinets in the kitchen fell off -- literally -- and when we investigated where the bugs were coming from, we discovered there is NO WALL BEHIND THE FRIDGE. The carpet was so old, it came up from the tract between the laminate-floor kitchen and the carpeted living room. My husband had to get stitches after he cut his foot on the metal tract, and our house looks really nice with the carpet coming up. And, with a toddler, totally unsafe. Can anyone say tetanus shot' The place fell down around our ears. By the end, we just stopped submitting complaints and requests for maintenance because they were blatantly ignored-- send them in writing by fax, guys, so you can prove the damages when you leave (but they will still be ignored by the management). We move out in 60 days, and have investigated the rents around the area in preparation to move. Sendera falls between the new complexes and the older ones in price. The place next door on Timmons (with the big parking lot) is about 200 cheaper. Yeah. Seriously.

The raw sewage is a BIG problem. Once we came home, and you could smell this awful rotten egg smell in the parking lot and the common area. Coming up the stairs to the townhouse left us with a feeling of dread as the smell just kept getting worse. When we got in, we realized the smell was coming from our leaky bathroom. We called management and they said that because it's just a smell, it would have to wait until maintenance had time to fix it. Yeah, and I'm sitting here with my toddler and my eyes and throat are burning from the stench. I said, we can't live like this. My husband said rotten egg smell means one of two things: sewage gas, or gas leak. Management said they'd find out if anyone was working on the sewer recently and call back. Half an hour later, no one and goten back to us. We called, no answer. Apparently the staff said f-it and went home for the day (must be nice). We had to call the fire department to figure out what the problem was. Lo and behold, when they saw a fire truck coming through the gate, the manager was on-site in a split second. She told the fire department that there is NO GAS IN THE COMMUNITY, didn't say one word to us, and peeled out of the parking lot. BIG LIE. WE PAY A GAS BILL EVERY MONTH. The fire department, then, determined the smell was sewer gas and informed us that we don't have gas, even though we pay for it (based, I'm sure, solely on the manager's lie). However, the fire department also said that sewer gas is actually poisonous (many people don't know this... I was surprised when I heard it) and that we couldn't stay there till the problem was resolved. The fire guy also said that management needed to have a licenced plumber out ASAP to fix the hazardous problem. No one ever showed up, and the manager said "Just flush the toilet and run the sink and the smell will go away". WHAT'''' And, just to note, WE pay for that water bill.

And, there is very limited parking space. When Ike happened, luckily we had power right away. Everyone had their families in. There was no parking. But, that is understandable. Hard times call for pulling together. The real problem is when you've got the 80s porche with 3 flat tires parked in the first-rate spot for a year. And when you have a four-wheeler taking up another space, which is chained down and has a cover on it (does that person still live here') But seriously, who couldn't notice the Lexxus bumper that fell off of someone's car and just lives in the parking spot now' Really, come on guys. It's already limited enough; then you have folks putting their dead cars and their bumpers around everywhere, and the problems last so long that it's pretty clear no one in the office ever actually walks around in this place. And, the other bloggers are right -- the gates are constantly left open, and management sends us notices about recent car break-ins, how to "protect ourselves" and reminds us that they are not responsible for our safety.

What was the real kicker is that when it was time for our lease to renew, they raised our rent!!! Are you kidding' Do they not remember the many faxes of maintenance requests they never fixed' Like the a/c vents that are duct-taped to the ceiling and of course are falling down'''' Like the leak in the bathroom' We turned our notice in the next Monday.

Basicaly they sucked our money for the last year. We found a 3 bedroom apartment at Kirby and Alabama in the 800s. We paid 1050 here for a 2 bedroom. Find another spot if you're considering... if you are already here, move out as soon as you can.

(Please note that this app wants to put apostrophes where my question marks are supposed to be... sorry guys... I'm actually very gramaticaly correct.)

Let me start by saying, first, I do not work for the complex and I am in no way defending it. But, just to clarify a few things... I have lived here for over a year and my first month here was when everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong, including them double booking my lease and me not having a place to move my stuff from another city for the first month. When I finally got into my place that I currently live now, there were a few roaches during that first month. Based on my experience with living in apartments, I knew not to ask the apartment about spraying, especially in a Greystar community. Their customer service has never been great. I spray monthly in my own place with the basic roach killer found at the store, and haven't had a problem since the first month. As for the gas, my boyfriend is a firefighter and I asked him the same questions about the gas bill at one time. There is no gas in the complex (i.e. gas stoves). However, we do pay for gas to heat our water and such. That is what we are paying for. So if you are running water for other problems and there is any heat to it, that's where that price is coming from. The parking has not been too bad for me. I work late hours and come home way after everyone else. Occassionally I have not been able to find a spot near my door, and only once in the past year have I not been able to find an actual parking spot. However, the complex could care less about parking in fire zones (g*d help us if there is a fire!) so there is always plenty of parking in front on buildings. My only complaint is how thin the walls are since I am next door to college boys who smoke and drink outside my door every weekend. However, I live in a complex and not a house, so I have to expect that. I certainly hated Sendera when I first moved in, but I've renewed my lease three times now. I've learned that I can complain and keep paying to move every year or I can live with what I've got and deal. Yes, they raise rent $10 each time you renew. That's what ever complex does, so I am okay with that. They have bills to pay too and prices are going up everywhere. Back to customer service, ask anyone who lives here. The only employee who gives a crap about you is Jill. The others don't care and wont help. I always know to go to Jill if I need anything and it gets taken care of right away.

Hi misspeach313 - I am reading your comments with great interest and fear because it sounds like you are describing the very apartment that I am about to move into. I am a current Sendera resident in a 1-BR, and I leased one of the townhouse apts. to move in late September. I'm sure it's the same apartment you're in now. I, too, have a roach problem and was hoping that moving would solve that - evidently not! And it sounds like the apartment has many other issues. I would love to talk with you in greater detail because it sounds like I should pull the plug on the decision I've made. If you see this, can you respond on this site if you're willing to visit? Many thanks - jimbo1126

I lived in 1610. If you're thinking about moving into it, don't. We tried to clean that place for the next guy (and we pity him or her, we do, I'm so sorry if it's you). i sprayed and cleaned the bugs I saw. We went back two days later and there were freaking roaches EVERYWHERE. It was like they were freaking out or something. It was nuts.
