Change Your Locks and your location!

Okay, "Why Lock Your Door," was so on point all I could do was echo the same sentiments as the writer.
But locking the door is not enough.
I have had items stolen by the trusty-dusty maintenance crew.
How do I know you ask' Well, no one else had access to my apt accept my mother who lives in Fort Worth.
(You know the cow-town city 270 miles away') Plus the fact that one of the maintenance men let me know that he had his eye on me.
Now how's that 4 warm-fuzzy feelings' Someone in maintenance not only entered my apartment off and on, but took jewelry, my cell phone, the charger, and the charger for a new phone that I'd recently purchased.
Funny thing is, when I brought it to management's attention, they defended their precious maintenance crew like a lioness to her cub.
Miraculously, the charger for my new phone re-appeared the very next day by my bed.
(But I'm crazy') At the helm of some of these "various" crime sprees is one person that almost everyone knows, but will not turn in either.
It is believed that he has had something to do with almost all of the break-ins at the complex.
I was hit again Saturday the 12th.
This time someone broke in via my patio.
The culprits were obviously kids judging by the items they took, including my Ginger Ale! I mean let's just add insult to injury why don't we.
You steal my things and then take a drink' People are hi-tailing it out of that place like bats out of hell.
There are so many vacant units its ridiculous.
A sign perhaps' Management changes as often as most of us change our underwear.
The police officer that assisted me stated that these apartments are going to hell, and at record speed.
I know that its summertime and kids are bored, but it doesn't give them the right to steal.
I wish I could stay home all day like some people get to do, but I am a single female and I have to work.
I think it's sad that single women are always targets for crime, but to have neighbors watching us, when we leave, when we come home, who we bring into our homes, is scary.
These thieves know my schedule better than I do.
And if the ginger ale comment didn't take the cake, the leasing agent that I gave my case number to actually suggested that I get my hands on a "nanny cam" to try to "catch" the thieves.
Now, I don't know about you all, but I am not trying to make my acting debut as best supporting actress in a life/death struggle in a robbery.
I plan on moving.
I love my apartment, but I love my life more.

Manager's Response |

I appreciate your candor and can understand your frustration. Having something stolen is always unsettling and often leaves the person shaken and looking for retribution. I do feel for your loss, however it does not give you license to make baseless accusations against my staff. You also allege that neighborhood kids have broken in as well, are you certain that these same "kids" have not been doing this the whole time? Know that I take resident concerns very seriously and hold my staff accountable for their actions. If someone has broekn the law, they will be dealt with. When we spoke about this, the suggestion was made to get a small camera to catch the culprit, the purpose of which is to discover who is perpetrating the crime. As you stated, you believe the thief knows your schedule better than you do; that being said, the thief has entered only when you are away, essentially eliminating the possibility of your "acting debut". We have been cooperative, helpful, and made suggestions as to how to ensnare the perpetrator, all of which have been met with hostility and skepticism. If you choose not to accept our help or work with us to create a solution, then the situation is only going to continue. I implore you to please come in to the office and work with us to put an end to this. Unfortunately crime is a presence no matter where you live and the best defense against personal crimes is vigilance. Check all of your windows and make sure they're all locked tight. Report any suspicious activity, and be aware of your surroundings. If we all work together as a community, we can eliminate these instances and create a thriving community, but only if we work together. |

Don't bother talking to the staff. They will only tell you it is expected and " ... after all, this is Houston."
Good bless you on your move. Hopefully your next community will be with fewer hoodlums where such crime isn't expected.

WOW!!!! I would like to thank you for your honesty about the Vanderbilt property. I am sorry your apartment was broken into, but I can't say I'm surprised. These break in seems to be happening more often. They just had another break in right near the office about a little over a week ago, so I really do not think it matters where your apartment is located. It???s getting bad period since my friend started living there almost 3 years ago. She lives in the front and loves the apartments or should I say did love, now she is worried too.
It's funny what you mentioned about the maintenance workers, my friend has even stated issues with maintenance before. I don't think your accusations are false by any means and it sucks to read how management responded to your situation. If management can't stop this simple problem, what???s going to happen if these problems escalate? Which it seems things have gotten out of control. From what I can read, management has basically said it's your fault and you were being hostile towards them. Shoot, it seems to me like management has a little angry tone in its response. That isn???t right at all. Gees, one of your residents just got burglarized twice, have some compassion not hostility. I just do feel it???s worth the risk, you need to move baby girl if you can move. Unfortunately it looks like management is not going to do anything for you. They are trying to place the blame elsewhere besides on themselves. Crime does happen everywhere, I understand that but it???s usually like lightening it does not strike twice. I'm sorry I did laugh at one thing, the camera suggestion. Who can afford those? Why should you have to be inspector gadget, wait for it to happen again just for management to THEN take action? If the camera captures you being hurt or something then what would management do? That reasoning is absurd. Why doesn't management supply ???You??? with the cameras if it???s such a good solution? Sounds to me they sure as heck haven???t done anything to make you feel better or safer.
To the Manager, you should be ashamed of yourself! I have always been told the customer is always right. Being a good manager means solving problems & potential problem as well as satisfying your customers in this case the tenants. Grow up, solve the problem and don't get and attitude for comments made that is very childish. People pay to stay in your complex, and you have broken gates, only one security officer, and he doesn???t work on the weekends. I mean dude, what are you guys doing to help make your residents feel safe?
