Pretty cool so far

I have only lived here a few months and so far I'm liking my stay. I moved here from the Cabochon - a complex right across the freeway, and so far I'm glad I did. Chaparral Creek is an older complex, so it isn't as fancy as something like the Cabochon, but the grounds and the park like setting are well-maintained. I like the landscaping, walking trails, creeks, duck pond, etc.
I live in a 1000 square foot 2 story loft and am paying $840 - that is a steal! You won't get many other apartments around the area for that price and size. My rent would've been even cheaper if I didn't go for the upgrades - they installed berber carpet, painted the walls a taupe color, and installed wood laminate flooring, so it makes it nicer. The layout is functional and I have plenty of closet/storage space. Depending on where your unit is located, you can get a nice, serene view of greenery - for example, mine is overlooking a creek and right when I see my living area, all I see are lush trees and greens in the windows.
My particular unit stays pretty cool because it's not facing direct sunlight, but I suspect that most units do because the windows aren't too big or have some sort of overhang covering them.
I dont' have washer and dryer hookups but I do get the free laundry service. I LOVE it. It might be a pain to try to get to the facilities before 10am (as most of us are working at that time), but it's well worth it to have a freshly washed and folded load of laundry.
I have not seen any pest/bug issues... maybe one waterbug has found its way inside but in general, if you are a clean person (like I am), you should not have a problem.
Everyone has assigned covered parking, which is nice. I feel pretty safe here at night and would recommend it to any single female living alone. The commmunity is more family oriented so you will see a lot of young children outside playing. It's quaint.
I have an outdoor storage area on my balcony but have not been able to use it - that's my one complaint. The roof was leaking and when it started pouring, it broke down the drywall and leaked in the storage... luckily I only stored boxes back there. I have given up on following up on this... like any place, the maintenance folks are at a third party's mercy... they can't work on the drywall til the roofers fix the leak... and they have tried many times and still have not fixed it. I'm just glad my actual unit is not leaking - which was the case at my old apartment.
Other than that, management and maintenance are usually responsive. They've responded quickly to minor maintenance issues and everyone has been really nice. They even cleaned my second story wall of windows for me - that's a great service!
The gym is pretty basic and I wish they didn't cut back on the hours, but it's still a nice amenity. I haven't used any of the pools yet but they all seem well-kept.
I haven't had too many "paper thin walls" issues, so I can't complain about the noise. Verizon FIOS is available, and the service rocks!
Just like any place, stay clear of renting a place where you won't be able to see the actual unit til you move in... I've heard horror stories from new tenants complaining to the staff in the leasing office. I was lucky in that my unit happened to be vacant - so I was able to "kick the tires" on my place -- check the closets, the switches, the plumbing, etc. I was shown another smaller unit that was similar to the one I'd be renting, but I was uncomfortable with putting a deposit down for a unit I wouldn't actually be able to see. So proceed with caution if you do this.
The location is excellent - easy access to the freeway, close to grocery stores/shops, close to Las Colinas business areas, and right across from a country club.
Unless they increase my rent by a ridiculous amount or cut down the trees outside of my window, I plan on staying here for a long time, at least until I buy my own home. I have moved 3 times over the past 3 years since I've been in the metroplex, and so far this is the best/most practical place for me.
