Mandalay on the Lake

Not perfect, but not bad

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
My wife and I lived here for the year that we spent in the Dallas area. I have mixed, but overall good, feelings about it.
Staff: Pamela (not sure if she's still there) got us to sign the lease, and throughout the year she was very helpful and personable. I didn't get a good feel for the rest of the staff; sometimes I had less than satisfactory experiences with them, but nothing too big.
Location: The location is extremely boring, but safe. You at least have easy highway access. If I could do it over I would probably have lived in a neighborhood less dominated by office buildings; if you have a view of the "lake," this wouldn't be too bad. If you're new to the area, be warned that YOU CAN'T BUY BOOZE IN IRVING! At least in Mandalay you are close to the Dallas border.
Security: There was a rash of vehicle break-ins while we were there, and we fell victim to one. Initially I didn't feel like the security risk was being taken at all seriously, but eventually they installed some cameras. I believe they also hired a guard, although I can't claim to have ever seen one. I wouldn't at all worry about being mugged or anything, given the area.
Noise: I saw that some reviewers complained about pool noise, but if you're not close to the pool, there's not much noise. Of course you hear the people above you. I only noticed the people next to me when they were yelling loudly.
Price: I can't helpfully compare to other nearby apartments. We did get a good deal compared to their advertised prices, so don't be scared away without seeing if they'll offer you a discount.
Maintenance: When we moved in, we noted some very minor problems in the apartment (on the move-in checklist sheet) just so that we wouldn't be charged for them later. To our surprise, maintenance came in and immediately fixed them all while we were gone! You may find yourself calling them, however, as some fixtures like the cabinets are not as well constructed as they might look.
I think that covers some of the bigger areas. I hope that this is helpful. Overall, I wasn't entirely blown away by them, but I can't say that anything horrifying happened. This is a perfectly adequate apartment complex, especially if for some reason the location appeals to you.
