Excellent, excellent apartments. A brief breakdown of pros and cons:
PRO:
--GREAT staff, with very prompt/effective service. Robert and Andrea are pleasant, helpful, and true to their word. They made us feel wanted and welcomed when we first toured the complex, and have taken care of all our maintenance requests promptly ever since.
--Good neighbors. We have a mixed population (black, white, and Hispanic) and lots of families. Drive by at dusk and you'll see kids playing ball and adults sitting out on the stoop to watch them. It's a very safe neighborhood, and kids are usually supervised fairly well.
--Nice, clean, livable apartments. They're about 20 years old, so not the newest in town, but everything has been extremely well-kept (including the AC!) and we've had no problems with mold, pipe breakages, or pests. They also put down new paint and carpet for each new resident, which is nice.
--Safe and sanitary grounds. Grass is regularly mowed, dumpsters emptied before they're full, and there's always plenty of parking. I don't believe we've had any home or car burglaries in the year that I've lived here, and best of all, we have a police officer living on the premises.
CON:
--A very large proportion of residents and maintenance staff speak only Spanish, so although your neighbors will probably be friendly and your dishwasher repairman prompt and helpful, you may not be able to communicate very well with either.
--It can be noisy. Sometimes kids run and scream during the day, and a few people like to play their car stereos REALLY loudly. If your neighbors have their TV up loud, you will definitely hear them. However, most noises don't generally last more than a few minutes, and we've never been kept up by anything loud enough to be called a disturbance of the peace.
--There's sometimes trash around. We recently received a letter from the office asking residents to be more responsible with their litter and dog waste, and this has been something of a problem lately. (Every now and again I find a shopping cart by our front stairs, too.) It's annoying, but rarely unsafe.
All in all, this is a great place to live. Surrey Oaks is not the Ritz, but represents EXTREMELY good value for your money, and I would strongly recommend it for anyone in the market for a clean, comfortable, affordable, and safe home.
