Nick, I have been told that if you fear for your safety that you can get out of your lease. If that is true or not I am not a legal expert but it would be worth checking into. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Yes, that's true. It's part of a tenant's right. If you fear for your safety and well-being, and you feel that living in that area will jeopardize your security, that you have the right to break your lease.
