Check the police reports before moving in...

I looked into moving here around the November time frame and everything looked great. The apartments were beautiful (though they lacked storage space, and basic ammenties like ceiling fans) and the property itself was really gorgeous.
I liked how it didn't "look" like a traditional apartment complex.
A couple of weeks ago, I checked with the Irving police department for crime stats on the property which is something I routinely do when I move to new areas and properties and was shocked to see everthing from stolen tires all the way to full blown auto-theft on a consistent basis.
When the property called to ask when I would be signing a lease, I told the first woman I spoke with what I found and while she said they had just spent a lot of money for cameras and better lighting and that they haven't had any problems in the last 2 months, the police records would say otherwise. I also spoke with the manager yesterday and after telling her why I wouldnt be leasing there, she just gave a polite "ok" and didn't even try to defend the place.
For anyone out there - not just looking into this place, always check the police records before signing anything.
