If you truly have a medical condition all you have to do is bring a note from your doctor to the leasing office. Service animlas are not considered pets, but there are also assistance animals that are "prescribed" by physicians for mental health. HUD has regulations regarding such circumstances for specific states so do your homework if you really need the animal.
