You Get What You Pay For

These apartments are okay, and for a young person or young couple The Lane makes a nice starting apartment.
That being said, you probably won't want to live here for any longer than you have to. "Affordable" rent rates mean that you will likely have to put up with a lot of undesirables living near you, and in the year I've been living here this complex has gotten more and more ghetto by the day. If the constant noise of trucks grinding along on I-30 and intentionally engine braking as they drive by (is this some kind of running joke among truckers') doesn't get to you, then the idiot residents who, for whatever inexplicable reason, seem to arbitrarily make gratuitous amounts of noise 24/7 probably will. From $500 ghetto wagons kitted out with $2000 worth of stereo equipment blasting in the parking lot, to lazy morons who sit in their cars and HONK repeatedly rather than actually walking to whoever's door and knocking, to trashy neighbors who yell across the complex, you will probably never know a moment's peace.
In addition to the noise issues, there are also roving bands of "minorities" that I regularly see milling about in the parking lots after midnight, as well as others who think that it's perfectly acceptable to walk around openly smoking cannabis blunts for all to see. Despite the fact that this complex is located in the middle of a heavily policed retail district, misdemeanor crimes here are a major problem.
There are also an ungodly amount of feral cats occupying the premises, but that probably won't bother you as much as the low-class people who, despite the fact that none of the apartments are more than 50 yards from the nearest dumpster, seem to think it's alright to leave dirty diapers, busted appliances, bags of rotting garbage, and other trash/refuse in the common areas for days at a time.
I could go on with a list of other complaints, such as the hypersensitive smoke alarms that go off everytime someone tries to cook dinner, the shoddy band-aid mentality towards repairs, the numbers of small children playing in the parking lots (unsupervised and completely heedless of the multitude of vehicles driving around), and the fact that you will absolutely HEMMORAGE money on your energy bills due to poor insulation (HUGE issue), but I have a feeling I'm preaching to the choir.
There are a few amenities, though. As I mentioned previously, the rent rates are fairly cheap in comparison to other nearby apartment complexes. Additionally, the swimming pools are usually impeccably clean and well maintained, and being in a retail district means that one can obtain almost everything needed for daily life through stores that are easily within walking distance. The office staff are also, for the most part, friendly and respond quickly (usually within 24 hours) to any issues that may arise with your apartment. There are also usually a large amount of parking spaces to suit your convenience.
The Lane is a decent place to live, but you probably won't want to stay here for the long term. As the old addage goes, you get what you pay for.
