My husband and I have lived at McDermott Place for 15 mo in 1400 sq ft. for $1160 a month and only a $99 deposit. We have decided to move to a more urban living area. And the following is what we found after our stint here.
You can opt for apts. with a 2 car garage below the apartment. They do have a TV installed in the kitchen, which is nice, but not a necessity and in fact takes up some very much needed counter space. Other than the "good deal" on these apts, I have been disappointed. You DO NOT have your choice of utility companies. You MUST use US online for DSL and they SUCK!!! We have gone months without internet service and although we asked, they never agreed to any compensation. Coserv is the Electric and they are ok, but our electric bill was out of the roof! Our electric for the coldest months and the hottest months were close to $150. The vaulted ceilings made it difficult to maintain a good even temp through out the apt. On top of that they have TERRIBLE insulation, you can feel the hot/cold air passing through the bottom of the door and windows. I know that attributed to a higher electric bill. SWBT cannot offer their deals to McDermott Place Residents because SWB does not maintain the lines, so if you want the total package for $50---forget it, no can do. Also US Online is responsible for the cable, so for minimal services it was $85. I have never paid so much for utilities ever----even at a house.
This is a VERY family oriented environment; so if you are looking to meet people that is a good generalization of the crowd. If you are a college grad or young professional looking to meet others the same, they aren't here.
The noise was a huge problem for us. The residence noise I found was more annoying than when we lived in a downtown apt next to the fire station. Expect to hear your neighbors ---on all sides of you, phones, TV, stereos, conversations, showers, toilets literally everything can be heard. You will know exactly every time your downstairs neighbors come and go, how many sacks of groceries they bought according to how many times the door slams shut (hard enough to rattle the windows and walls'freak out the cat.) When we first moved in the neighbors that we on the other side of our bedroom had a baby that would cry all night and the parents would either just let it cry or sleep thorough the blood curdling screams until we would bang on the wall to get wake them to go shut it up. It was a good form of birth control. Personally I prefer the symphony of city noises, horns, car alarms, trucks rumbling.
We found that McDermott Place was also too far from a good hang'.we found that we were driving to downtown Dallas or Addison for entertainment and good restaurants, and that is a long drive. And the school zones are a nuisance. And not in the way you might think. It is soccer moms who speed in their SUVs, and then get pissed when they get behind you going the speed limit.
BUT, if you have LOTS of JUNK this is the place for you! There is a TON of storage space inside the apt as well as a huge storage closet off on of the 2 (count'em 1,2) balconies. Both balconies are quite big enough for a great sitting area for several people, one covered and the other not (to bad there is no view). Depending on your stage in life this may or may not be the place for you. The prices are good, pet deposit minimal, and after all isn't home where the heart is'
