Great to live, but check-out was nightmare

I would consider myself an "old school" resident as I lived at Post Legacy when there was no Angelika, when only a couple of Shops at Legacy were open, and the competition next door (Legacy Village) was a grassy field. When I moved in 2002, Post Legacy was up-and-coming "hip". It was more of an urban feel (floorplan, interior design, architecture) for the suburbs, which I liked as I had wanted something different than the typical cookie-cutter north Dallas apartments.

IMHO, the Post management that was present when I moved in was fabulous. They were courteous and helpful. Management changed throughout the course of my 2 year stay and I noticed a difference- when I checked out after my lease ended, this "new" management was worthless.

Overall, this is a great place to live, though I know the rental rates are somewhat on the higher-end, but the plus-side of living in a place like this is you're not living amongst bums or riff-raff, so you do feel safe. The neighborhood was always quiet when I lived there- I'd say the majority of the residents are single corporate-types and young yuppie couples. The "urban" feel of the community isn't really conducive to families (I think I only say 1-2 families with kids), though there are townhomes which can accomodate them. I loved my floorplan of my 1 BR, 1BA- I had a corner unit with plenty of windows.

Parking can be along the street (just like in the city) or in the secure gated parking garage. Crime was virtually non-existent when I was there, with the only reprimands directed at residents who couldn't figure out how to clean up after their pets.

I'm almost guessing that their pricing might have gone up because of the interest in that area, but I'm also thinking they might have also stayed low to keep up with the newer Legacy Village apartments that were built up within the last year, and are currently still building.

Anyways, my only and BIG negative about the whole experience which pretty much left a sour taste in my mouth upon leaving... when my lease was up, I gave my two-months' notice in writing stating I would not renew my lease. IMHO, I had been an "ideal" tenant who always paid my rent on time and never nagged the management for anything. My lease ran up during the summer '04 and I was preparing for a wedding and re-location out-of-state. In my two-month's notice, I gave them my contact information (I moved temporarily to stay with my parents who lived in Plano like 5 miles away from Post, prior to my wedding in the fall). When I checked out, everything was fine and dandy, or so I thought. I paid all the last month's rent, all the utilities, etc.

Fast forward to November 2004 when I'm newly married with my husband at his current duty station (not in Texas) and we're attempting to buy a car. At the dealership, the salesman pulled our credit reports up, and it was brought to my attention that Post had forwarded my name to a credit agency in the amount of $50 without my knowing! WTF' I called the Post Legacy management who claimed that "they didn't have my files anymore" and that I had to "contact their corporate offices in Atlanta" to figure out the discrepancy. Regardless of what this fee was for, they FAILED TO CONTACT ME DURING THE FOUR MONTHS I WAS RESIDING IN PLANO before my move and simpy forwarded my name to a credit agency. I literally could have brought a lawsuit up against Post for doing this!

Well, to make an already long story short, after countless phone calls and e-mails documenting that "I would seek legal action", the corporate offices miraculously found my file, and after they contacted Post Legacy and "talked to their representative" (the SAME guy who couldn't tell me anything except to call the corporate offices) and found out that upon check-out, Post claimed "the floor boards were messy, the tub was dirty and the counters were unclean" They were telling this to me, the type-A school teacher, who not only religiously cleans "for fun", but whom actually hired someone to professionally clean the entire apartment after I cleaned.

I threw my trump card and stated that no one had contacted me, and they couldn't argue that it was because I resided out-of-state. I had a copy of my two-months' notice which listed my temporary contact info after I moved out and I knew the corporate offices legally had to have it on file as well. Post corporate office lady probably felt dumb that I had them look stupid because their little guy in Plano never bothered to call to tell me of the charge, which any lawyer could argue I would have paid, based on my prior rent history where I had always paid on time.

So, it took them less than a week to send me a letter clearing my name on the credit report. Lesson learned here is to always make sure you check all your bases after you leave them. Post was nice when I paid the money nad lived with them, but they could have cared less about me when I had the right to leave. After that scenario, they don't merit a stellar review from me anymore.

Post was great to live in but I had 2 similar experiences on move out. I've lived there twice. The first time I moved out I didn't repaint my apartment because apparently the person who had rented it liked the paint job. When my office moved to the Legacy area and I moved back to Post I found out I owed them almost $700 for a repaint job!!! They also had my forwarding information but never contacted me and it also went on my credit report. The second incidence involved a roommate I had. I moved out, did the roommate release form, even paid a deposit for the roommate who was staying. A year and half later I find out I have a charge for $1,700 on my credit report from Post because of it! I was furious - first of all it wasn't true and second I was never informed! I couldn't believe it. On the paint job I ended up paying - it was the only way I could move back in - on the second - it's supposed to be taken care of - but I'm still having to work with the credit bureaus to get it off my report - which I think is unfair because it was an error on THEIR part. In both instances I had to deal with their corporate offices instead of the folks I'd been working with on a daily basis in the office when I lived there. And unfortunately I've heard a bunch of stories like this. You live there - it's fine, you move - it's a nightmare - unknown or unfair charges resulting in a bad credit report for you. They really need to look into their move-out policies. But on the flip side - to be fair - in my experience their apartments are better built and they maintain them better than most I've live in - so I'd say you're safe as long as you stay in touch after you move - which you shouldn't have to do - but better safe than sorry!

yea, these are very helpful posts! that is scary that they are slapping stuff on your credit report, it really worries me that it happened to two people.
