Nice complex, but left me feeling ripped off

I'll start this by saying I had a major case of buyer's remorse over my apartment & that I do think the office is too concerned with making $$. I felt like I was almost tricked into signing a lease by the office agent. He was very high pressure, saying that the apartment probably wouldn't be available long, offering me a "free" cruise to move in earlier than I planned, pointing out their "amazing" escrow plan to save money for a house, etc. They succeeded in talking me into a more expensive apartment than I wanted & moving in earlier, thereby paying double rent for a couple of weeks. Good salesmanship I suppose, but it tainted my opinion of the complex. The cruise ended up being a ripoff...it was only "free" on certain dates in a closet with bunkbeds at the bottom of the boat of some company that's had several BBB complaints. To upgrade cost as much as going on a carnival cruise would. The escrow thing was of no use unless you were planning to buy a house immediately after moving out, through the specified builder.

That being said, I did love my apt. I had an attached garage & 1st floor apt which was just fabulous. I always felt safe & the pool & fitness center were way above average. The pet stations were maintained well, which as a pet owner is important. I did hear a lot of noise from the apt above me, but it was someone with a boy around 4 years old, so I think he did a lot of running, jumping, etc. My first waterbill was about some crazy high amount. I went to the office & went over it with an agent who confirmed it was an error & would be corrected. She had me pay $20 which she said was about average & would cover my actual bill. This same process went on for about 6 months. Each time I had to go to the office & explain the whole story again, each time I was told it would be fixed & each time I'd get a rude letter on my door saying I owed $$. I ended up faxing two letters (b/c it wasn't corrected after the first letter, even though the manager called me to say she would take care of it) detailing the issue to the complex manager before the issue was resolved. Then, my water heater burst, but thankfully flooded the garage instead of my apt. A very nice maintenance guy did come & vaccum up all the water even though it was late at night, but it was a Friday & it ended up being Monday before they could get a new water heater in, so I had to stay with a friend b/c I had no water for the weekend. About halfway through my lease, my roommate moved out & left me with a 2 bdrm/2 bath apt. I inquired about moving into a 1 bdrm, but was told I'd still be breaking my lease & therefore have to pay all of the fees, discounts, etc, so it ended up being cheaper to stay in the 2 bdrm. I also thoroughly cleaned my apt from top to bottom before moving out, but only got $4 back after paying both a deposit for the apt & a pet deposit (1/2 of which was supposed to be refundable). By that point I was so glad to be free of the $1000/month rent I'd been paying by myself, I didn't bother arguing the refund.
So, the apartments & complex are very nice, just be wary of the sales pitch when you move in & don't hold high hopes for getting your deposit back.
