I currently live in a 2 bedroom in Phase I and though it may not be the best apartment money can buy, it's not that bad. Overall I've had a good experience here.
I have most definately looked around for other apartments but around this area, they seem to have a MUCH higher crime rate. Even the Amli, Estates at Frankford and Mandalay apartments have high complaints of break ins. As for the ghetto ones on McCallum, I didn't even feel safe walking around the premises during the day and I hear complaints from friends who get towed on a monthly basis. I??ve actually kept my car unlocked a few times on campus with valuable stuff inside and not once has it ever been stolen. Besides, our campus is located in the middle of Richardson, Dallas and east Plano. Not exactly the best of neighborhoods. If you??re expecting little to no crime, move to West Plano or Southlake, because Richardson is not the area for you.
Although sometimes, it takes maintenance a while to respond I haven't had too many problems. When my toilet broke, they fixed it in 2 days which caused an inconvenience but it didn't kill me. My dishwasher broke twice and they responded within 3 days both times.
I will admit there is a slight problem with infestation. I??ve had pest control visit 3 times within the past 6 months to spray but it didn??t help. I did have to clean out my fridge because the little bugs were started to take over. I think that it??s partially blamed on the tenant, I noticed a lot less bugs whenever me or my roommate made an effort to mop the kitchen as well as clean the dishes and clean the kitchen surfaces once or twice a week. However, I started using Raid on a weekly basis, just spraying around the edges of the wall and more bug prevalent areas as well as using Clorox disinfecting wipes to clean the surfaces and clean the floors and that seems to really be helping. The amount of roaches and ants have decreased A LOT since using it.
I agree it could be better, but its managable and requires some adjustment. As long as you keep your place clean and remember to spray your Raid on a weekly basis I think it really is fine. I'd rather pay up here then have my safety threatened over at McCallum. If you don??t mind a long drive as well as an increase in rent then I would recommend staying somewhere else like Plano or a particular place called Vintage at Legacy though it??s pretty pricey-$800 for their cheapest apartment. But if you're a college student on a budget like me than this place offers convenience of location, a nice price range as far as footage goes and it's safer than most of the apartments in this area of Dallas. I actually have just signed a lease to move in July to a one bedroom on campus in the same phase.

I forgot to note: the internet in my current building (7) is HORRIBLE. It's as slow as dialup and disconnects every 15 minutes. Unfortunately UTD says the signal is fine. So I guess it's because my room is farthest away from the router. I am hoping that when I move buildings it gets better. If not I will get AT&T DSL for $12.99 a month.
