It wasn't so bad except for getting raped

Stay away! I would not recommend this apartment complex for any student. If you haven't read the article from the Dallas Observer highlighting the many horrors of living in Waterview, click this link (http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/2005-04-28/news/featu lived there for 3 years and I was one of the students who was acquantaince raped. UTD Police said they *could* follow through with the investigation, but that there would be a hard time proving it was a rape (since my attacker said that I agreed to it) and not just two people that had sex.
The apartments are overpriced (many better alternatives within 3 miles of campus, and that give student discounts)
I, too, had a $500 discount in my housing to live on campus but I realized it just wasn't worth it. Even though they made recent improvements with the overall lighting around campus, I never felt 100% secure.
When UTD/Waterview started their "committee" to help solve the problems of Waterview, I always stressed they needed gated access to the complex or to the buildings. Many other dormatories are set up this way. You can't put up a sign that says, "All visitors must go to the UTD police station to park in Waterview Parking" and actually expect anyone to do it, especially anyone looking to cause trouble.
I lived on a first floor apartment and even after they "increased" their pest control by making us unload every kitchen and bathroom cabinet, I had a horrible infestation of ants just a few weeks after they came to spray. I told them about it and even moved the furniture away from the corners to make sure they could spray the baseboards really well, but I still had ants coming in. So I bought a can of Raid from Walmart and sprayed the baseboards myself (which ironically did the trick... what are they using' Koolaid')
And I lived in phase 7, one of the newer phases. Luckily for me, I never had the unfortunate oppotunity to live in phases 1-3.
I currently live just 2.5 miles off campus and there are bike trails even if I didn't have a car, for another way to get to school. For anyone thinking its *convenient* to live on campus, it's not worth the headache.
Oh and the wireless is a joke. You might as well call Comcast and tell them you want High Speed installed in your apartment if you want reliable internet service.
I wouldn't keep anything valuable in your car either, there are breakins on campus (and ironically none of the motorcycles in my phase got stolen... but the car windows were smashed in... my roommate's car got broken into and someone stole the backpack and textbooks from the car--that's pretty desperate even for a college student)
So those people that tell you "it's not that bad"... then tell me what is. Assaults, breakins, infestations, ... all of which I knew of within the FIRST year of living on campus (my freshman year there was an attempted assault in my building)... you have to ask yourself is it really worth it...
In the end, its not!
STAY AWAY!!
