I lived at Bitterwood for a year and found it was one of the best apartments I've lived at. I'll make this a thorough review as other reviews have been big on opinion but scarce on details. I rented a single bedroom (A2 floor plan) with my wife, and although the floor-plan was neat, it was a bit cramped @ 610 sq feet. What I did like was the amount of closet space- 2 coat closets and the full-size in bedroom. The bathroom, although small, was well laid out and had a decent linen closet.
Parking was never an issue and 90% of the time, I had a parking spot directly in front of my unit. Although parking is plentiful, it falls into two categories- full blown sun, or a shady spot. I used to go for the shady spot until I got tired of my vehicles constantly being crapped on by birds AND covered with tree sap, debris and leaves.
The complex is old and for the most part, very quiet. It has a park-like atmosphere to it. I never used the pool or the fitness room, but the tennis court was pretty sweet (it was recently re-surfaced). Although the complex was quiet (I lived in the 1500 building, which bordered backyards to homes), expect to hear a police / ambulance sirens every other day.
Due to the area (281 & Bitters), traffic was always heavy. Often, when I left for work in the morning, cars were backed up past the complex on Bitters due to the light @ West Avenue. If moving here, try to snag an apartment in the back that borders the backyards or the other (nicer) apartment complex, as this side is much quieter than units located by Bitters or by the business strip @ Bitters & West Avenue. Fortunately, most drivers are courteous and let you drive through.
Maintenance was always polite and made it a habit to announce / give warning before they entered. They also worked with schedules, and came when it was convenient to the resident. Walls are a bit on the thin side, but hey- you're living in apartments, that's expected! What I found really annoying was when these loud girls who lived above us came up or down the stairs in the middle of the night. Because the stairs are attached to the exterior wall and they stomped like idiots, it sounded like a herd of elephants was stampeding up & down the stairs! I was glad when they finally moved out.
The entry / exit gates were always working, unlike the apartment complex I'm living at now. Also, because of the location, many popular shops, restaurants, fast food joints are only 10 minutes (or less) away.
To get to 1604 though, its a better idea to go down Bitters and turn right @ Blanco- the traffic is a nightmare @ 281 & Bitters at peak hours (even since they've repaved and added lanes).
Management was decent, but they had a high turnover rate. In the year I was there, they must have gone through 3 managers.
Overall, I felt very safe. There was one time somebody attempted to open the door behind me after I unloaded groceries. Fortunately, my boxer alerted me and by the time I got the door, the intruder / ------- was gone. I won't fault Bitterwood for this- it comes with the teritory of living in apartments and could have happened anywhere. As always, use common sense, lock your doors and always be aware of your surroundings.
My complaints are minor. The kitchen and pantry space were lacking (in my floor plan) and the patio area wasn't fenced, so I was always hesitant to leave stuff out. The bathroom also fell short in the drawers and towel space dept. If you have a pet, get ready to shell out an extra 20 bucks a month! Pet rent sucks, considering the deposit you have to put down up front. Other than that, these apartments are pretty good. I've lived @ Cedar Creek and Lincoln Green and Bitterwood easily tops'em.
Thanks for reading- I hope this review has been helpful and informative.
