To: whom this may concern;
I am a first time Apt. renter with a 12 month lease for a one large bedroom Apt. with a fireplace on the third floor for $455 monthly. I was told on June 7th at 8am I could pick up my keys and be able to view before I sign. I took the day off from my job losing $160.00 so I can get my things moved in and be settled by the next day. They told me that it wasnt ready yet, to come back at 1200 noon. I said ok and went to my parents house to pack more of my things. At 1200 noon I came back and they again said its not ready yet, that the carpet cleaners are still working. They asked for me to come back at 3pm and it will for sure be ready. I came back at 4pm and it still wasnt ready. I was getting a little disappointed, but had already signed the lease. I then waited for an hour and finally, at 5pm, they gave me the keys. I graved my camera and took some pictures of anything I may find wrong so they would not blame it on me. I was very disappointed at the entire place. When I first viewed the place, they showed me a different apartment that was in great condition, but would not rent that one out. They said its only for show. They have a sign out front that claims that things are changing, but when talking with others whom been there for a while claim nothing has changed and that the sign has been up for almost a year. They are false advertising and with management not caring about keeping the area safe and not trying to fixing all the problems in this complex, I feel very unsafe and cheated out of my money. This list is what I made out of things wrong with the Apt.:
-The carpet did not look like it was cleaned at all -there was no fireplace -One outlet did not work -scratches all over the place -the sink looked very old and nasty, was painted over -blinds were very nasty and dirty -storage on the balcony smelled like someone whom never showered lived in it -balcony is cracked and looks and feels like its about to brake off -dishwasher not working properly, gets flooded and wont dry dishes -The oven dosnt heat properly to cook anything in -pool was green and nasty when I first arrived -some light bulbs were old and blown out, had to go to the store and buy my own. -24 hour maintenance takes over a week to get to finally fix a problem -I keep having to fill out a form for me to get mail saying that I live there, when confronted management, she said its not our problem, you need to talk with the mail man, he is very old and forgets that someone is living there. I then waited for him to come and when I asked him about it, he was very rude and claimed that I need to just fill out the form again and he said I will try not to forget. -keep hearing gun shots and people yelling at each other -at least once a week there has been 911 calls for shootings, disturbances and cars getting broken into. -There are loose dogs that keep roaming around -the stairway is creaked and looks and feels like its about to brake off.
When I tried to confront the main manager about this, she got very rude with me and walked away. I do not want to live here anymore due to the unsafe conditions, bad management, and all the problems this Apartment has with it. I tried to live with it, but have found better Apt. that take care of their people and keep the area safe. If there is anything you can do or that I can do to fix this problem please let me know. I dont want to ruin my credit, but feel like I have been scammed and need help

The only way to get out of your lease is maintenance issues. There are two ways to go about this. The first way is to put a complaint in writing. Keep in mind it needs to be something significant like your dishwasher. Wait long enough for them to fix it. I reccommend two weeks. Then, put another request in writing. Wait another two weeks, and give them a written 30 day notice that you will be leaving due to maintenance. Make sure that you get a signed letter from them saying that they are releasing you. The second way is to send a work order via certified mail or return receipt requested. You still need to wait long enough for them to take care of the problem. Then, give them the 30 day notice. You only have to send one request that way. I would only write one problem at a time, that way if they do fix something, you still have a backup problem. Read paragraph 31 of your lease. Your account also has to be up to date.
