I am currently a resident here at DeZavala Oaks. On May 18, 2006, my vehicle was broken into and trashed. In addition, 3 other cars were broken into the same night. When I notified the management of the situation, they told me that car break ins had been occuring throughout the entire week and seemed very bothered and agitated by my complaint. I asked why they had not posted flyers informing other residents of the reoccuring problems and they just shrugged their shoulders and looked at one another speechless without a response to my question. Also, the "limited" access gate had been broken for approximately 3 weeks without repair allowing unlimited access for anyone and everyone. One of the reasons I moved into this apartment community, was because it featured an access gate. Unfortunately, for a the 3 week period I was not provided security as stated in the property's exterior features. Due to the property's negligence of not repairing the access gate, I am facing a loss of approximately $3,000 in damages. The day I made the complaint of the broken access gate, along with the 3 other residence whose vehicles were also burglarized the same night, the gate was repaired. What I don't understand - is why it took so long to repair the gate and why management did not inform the community of the problem as they did in the past. It shouldn't have taken over 2-3 days for the repairing of the fence which would have reduced the chances of non-residence from entering the property and burglarizing vehicles. When I spoke with the officer, I was informed that he had been called to this property about 10 times within 3 days for the same situation. About two days after the gate was repaired, the dial pad appeared to have been rammed and the gate is broken again. I don't feel safe here anymore and I'm afraid to go outside after dark, now that the gate is broken again. And now that I've talked to other residence of this complex, I've come to realize that this place is far more worse than what I thought. People have had their rims and tires stolen, apartment break ins have occured resulting in a loss of TVs, and some residences have been seen smoking weed and barbecuing on thier balconies repetitive times. Obviously, these problems have been occuring frequently and nothing is being done as a way of resolving the problem. No cameras have been put up, there is no sufficient lighting, and "on-site security" is nowhere to be found. You'd figure after all these occurences something would get done but it's like talking to a brick wall when it comes to the residential management - complaints just bounce right off and no response is given except "make a report with the police." My advice for you is to take precautionary measures yourself and keep complaining hoping something will get done otherwise, you could be next!

That is the reason that I left that apartment complex. I do have to admit when I first moved there three years ago it was not like that. But just in the past few months is when it started to get horrible. My theory is the katrina evacuees because my friends lived in a very upscale complex and as soon as they let the evacuees in that is when everything went to hell. My friends car got broken into three times and tires slashed in a 6month period at the oaks and nothing was done. Then mine was broken into and that was it I got the hell out of there. I highly reccommend that people read these ratings websites because they are true and that is how I found my new place. Also do your research by going the the SAPD website and check out all the crime reports in your area they give you the address where it happened so you can be more aware of how the area is.
