DON'T!

I rented a one bedroom apartment and on the day that I came to pick up my keys, I took a look at the apartment before I went home to start moving my belongings...and I'm so glad I did.
One of the doors in the balcony area was hanging by one hinge and when I tried to close them, they closed and "caved in" to the washer/dryer space.
The french doors in the front and the back had paint drippings on several of the panes of glass. One of the doors had actual pieces of the wood broken off around the panes. The panes were dirty.
The kitchen cabinets, the bathroom cabinets, the windows and yes, even the chandelier had paint "overspray" on them. Lots!
The carpet had a musty smell because they had a burst pipe the day before which I wasn't told about until I asked why the apartment smelled so bad.
I could go on. The positive thing that I can say is that I was honest but polite with the manager when I went back to his office and simply said that it was not acceptable and that I did not want to live there after all. He kept my application fee, but I got my deposit refunded to me within two weeks with no argument.
