Carbon monoxide

We had several problems with the AC cutting out and doors falling off of the hinges requiring multiple trips by the maint staff. We came home one night in late June and noticed a disturbing smell (similar to burning plastic). After being unable to determine the exact location of the smell and suspecting that our (often screaming and fighting) neighbors were not home and may have been the cause, we decided to call the fire department non-emergency line. They kindly sent a fire truck to investigate our apartment as well as our neighbors'. The culprit was no surprise. The AC unit's motor was crapping out on us and stinking up the place.
But wait. There's more. Much to our dismay, the fire captain, after carefully reviewing the furnace located under the AC unit, discovered that the flame is burning yellow which, he went on to explain, meant that it was not burning all of the fuel and therefore had been releasing Carbon monoxide into our apt. After there was no pick up on the maint *Emergency* phone line (or ever a call back for that matter), the fire captain was required to shut off the power to our furnace/AC units. It took the apt complex a little more than a month to repair the AC unit (June through July). As for the furnace' The apt manager explained that it was normal, poses no threat, (I suppose she knew something the fire department didn't) and that there??s not much she can do except for shut it off if we really *felt like it was a problem. Needless to say; we shut it off. We moved out two months later and may never know if they ever really intend on fixing that furnace. To sum up our experience:
Slow to arrive maint.
Toilet leaked on neighbors downstairs.
Possible Carbon Monoxide leak.
Car broken into twice in 6 mo's.
Generally unhelpful staff.
Emergency vehicles always whizzing by the apt complex made enough noise to actually compete with our neighbors.
AC broke down/ran out of Freon about once a month.
The closet, kitchen pantry, and patio screen doors all fell off the hinges several times due to bad design.
but the pool was ok.
Also pretty cheap; but if I account for what was taken from my car, we could have lived in a nicer, friendlier, safer place to call home.
