It's cheap but not the best kept or safest place to live

I lived at this complex for over 5 years. I moved in because the rent was affordable and the apartments were large with lots of space and storage room. Over the years I learned that there is a big difference between "affordable" and "cheap". This place really is cheap and I think that is part of the problem. I had some good neighbors and some terrible neighbors. Lots of riff-raff moved in the last couple of years probably because they could now afford the rent. There were plenty of well-mannered kids in the complex but there were also some really thuggish looking ones too. I suspect some of the thuggish looking kids were responsible for the graffiti that would appear in the common entry ways.

The complex wasn't maintained nicely. There's trash on the lawns and in the bushes. Lots of fast food wrappers and cups. Seriously, I used to pay my kid to go pick up trash so I wouldn't have to look at it. It was really sad watching the lawn maintenance people kick the trash aside when they mowed instead of picking it up. There was no enforcement of the rule about walking pets in the back of the complex. People would let their dogs relieve themselves right outside your window or patio. Gross.

The security company they hired to drive through the complex every night was ineffective. One night in 2007 several cars were broken into on the same night. My car and at least 2 others parked in the same aisle were broken into. And that was one of several car break-ins that occurred during the time I lived there. They really need to consider putting up gates or increasing the security patrols.

The apartments themselves are large sized and well insulated. I wasn't too bothered by noise from next door neighbors. But they are in poor shape. The complex itself is old and the appliances, countertops and tile are really showing their age. It's past time for upgrades and physical improvements. I do have to say that they were responsive with repairs but they always seemed to take the cheapest route and didn't try to make it look nice. I felt that my $800 a month should get me something more than free basic cable from Grande Com. I would gladly have traded free basic cable for real repairs instead of patch up jobs. Or upgraded appliances.

The office staff seemed pleasant but I never found them to be on top of things. They always seem flustered and rushed and their office is really out of date. They don't have computers at all. They're the only place I know that still uses a typewriter to fill out forms. And the forms actually have carbon paper. I was really upset when they left a copy of a document taped to my door because it actually included my full name, DOB and SSN. Hellllloooo! This is all the info you need to steal someone's identity and taping it to a door is not secure. They also need to offer some office hours so that residents can stop by and talk to them or pick up sensitive documents in the evenings. The complex I moved to is open from 10am to 6pm a couple of days during the week and they are open a few hours on Sat and Sun too. They don't tape things with my personal info to my door either.

I guess if you just need a cheap place to sleep at night and store your stuff then Honey Hill could be perfect for you. But if you value the safety of your property and you want to live somewhere that looks nice and is well kept then you might want to look somewhere else.
