Was once a great place to live. Troubled to read so many bad reviews.

I read all the previous comments and none of them predate 2000 so no one before 2000 has expressed any opinion. Well I lived there for 18 years, and when I lived there (1970 to 1988)it was a great place to live. Untill shortly after Kelly AFB closing it was a thriving little community with a leasing manager (Erna Rose Kirk) that was long term, very kind, responsible and managed to keep that complex well run and maintenace orders were always completed within reasonalbe time by long term onsite crew. The occupency always seamed to be very high with very few vacancys and all the yards were always kept extremely well manicured. Alot of the tenents were long term and a high percentage was former or retired military. There used to be a strip mall at the military end of Gilmore and Croyden where I saw many different business open and close. The Gopher Hole was the most popular and the one that lasted the longest. It had a laundry mat, beauty shop, a liquer store, tektronix, a cap manufacturing, auto parts...In front of the strip mall was the Quick mart with gas station and on the other side of that was the entrance into the military base. Behind the strip mall was the bowling alley which was our familys life blood and the community gathering spot. I lived in at least 3 or 4 different units and had neighbor friends that lived in the same unit for more than 10 years. We had free assigned covered parking. Asside from the occasional drunks from the Gopher Hole or the bowling alley it was pretty quiet. Sure the windows and walls were thin and the appliances and fixtures old but it was inexpensive with large floor plans and back then was well maintained. I think that all the previous bad reviews are a result of a loss of customer service which is a direct result of poor management. Those young gung ho managers of today know nothing about customer service. San Antonio and Mitchell Village is where I grew up and San Antonio will always be home. They say you should never forget where you came from but since i've been gone i've come back a couple times and there dosen't seem to be much left to remember. The bowling alley (Spare Time) is completely gone, the strip mall is completely shut down, the base is closed, and the community looks deserted.
