I want to start off by saying I like this apartment. The apt is nice (not the nicest I have lived in but it certainly has the best quality to price ratio out there) and so is the neighborhood. They fix things inside the apartment quickly and generally are courteous and attentive to the needs of the residents.
Unfortunately, there is crime there. I guess those kind of people go to the nicer neighborhoods to rob and steal. I m not surprised by that. What I am surprised by is the management s business practices and reaction to said crime. My complaints are as follows:
a. They advertise a gated community but the gate is always broken. Complaints are heard but the gate is still broken MOST of the time. Funny because to get OUT you have to wait for "OUT" the gate to open... but the IN gate is always stuck open. I figured I had recourse via the lease BUT reviewing it, they had an addendum clause in it that says: NEITHER JMG NOR THE OWNER HAVE ANY OBLIGATION TO CONTINUE TO USE SUCH DEVICE OR PATROL PERSONNEL OR SERVICE AND FURTHER AGREES AND ACKNOWLEDGES THAT JMG AND THE OWNER WILL NOT BE LIBLE TO THE RESIDENT FOR CEASING TO USE SUCH A SECURITY DEVICE OR PATROL PERSONNEL OR SERVICE ON THE PROPERTY. Renter beware they advertise one thing but then make you sign something (2/3rds of the way through signing more than innocuous 10 addendums that mean nothing to most people) that says they can fail to deliver and you can t do a thing about it.
b. After two ARMED assaults on residents and thousands of dollars of theft they installed security cameras on the property. Good we all thought... at least they are trying to deter crime. Upon further inspection, it is obvious to anyone with a small amount of experience with electronics that they are FAKE. They have a video cable that runs into a solid 6x6 wood beam and there are no wires coming out anywhere from that beam. There is no antenna and a wireless camera doesn t need a video cable. Duh! This is another attempt to blow smoke at the residents and let us think they are actually doing something.
c. Lastly, other residents have told me they have instructions taped behind the counter instructing employees how to answer (they don t lie they just don t tell the truth) potential renter s questions on neighborhood crime. It goes as far as telling people not to call the local PD or trust police reports/statistics on the area as they are not accurate.
I have to say that the management is not responsible for stopping crime but I think they are failing in their responsibility to deliver what they adverstise (ie a gated community meaning it not only HAS a gate, but said gate WORKS) and to contribute to the safety of THEIR property in a meaningful way. To me that only makes good business sense but they are trying to do it on the cheap, just like everthing else, and they have lost the trust and confidence of many residents.
