If you have children, small pets, low paying job and no roomate, or if you're in the military, or plan on going into the military, DON'T MOVE HERE.
First, the appliances. When we moved in, there was no fridge, and no burner pans. It took them 2 days to get a fridge, so we stayed elsewhere until then. We wanted to get a washer and dryer, and after measuring the closet with the hookups, realized that they don't make any thin enough to fit, and even if the did, there'd be maybe 3 -r 4 feet of space between the fronts of them. Their laundry facilities have machines in them that are from the 80's, and the washers only have two settings: hot and cold. It was also cheaper for us to drive 20 minutes away to my parents house and do laundry, than it was to use their over priced machines.
Then, there's the ants. Both sugar ants and fire ants. I told the office, and didn't see an exterminator until almost 2 months later, and he only got rid of the sugar ants for 2 weeks instead of the 2 months he promised.
Our next issue there was the "fire safety inspection", done by the maintenance crew. Basically, a guy walked in, looked under our kitchen sink, and told us that we needed a fire extinguisher, and would give us one later. He didn't bother to check out alarms, which had been going off randomly since we had moved in the month before, evne though we had called the office about it several times. We figured out ourselves that the batteries were dying, and went and bought them, again, ourselves. The lease said that maintenance was in charge of that, and would take care of any problems. When we left after 7 months, there was still no fire extinguisher.
I've had to park several buildings away fom my house, resulting in 5 minute walks, because there's no assigned parking, and people love to throw parties and have their friends take up all the paking spaces. A five minute walk may not seem bad to most people, but I have athritic knees and worked the night shift waiting tables, so I could pay the rent. You have to pay extra to park under the awnings, and no one at the office will give you the same price. Thankfully, it IS a quiet place, but it's more because people don't want the cops to come break up their parties.
There were three police raids at the SAME building, all in the same month, and my neighbors said that it was a common thing.
When my husband signed up for delayed enlistment into the military, we let them know when we would be leaving as soon as we found out, 3 months in advance. They told us to go ahead and let them know the 60 days ahead of time, and then all we had to do was pay last month's rent on time and turn in the keys when we were ready to leave. We came back at the agreed upon time, and they said that we couldn't break the lease without written orders of when we were leaving the state. First off, you aren't given orders for basic, and NO ONE except other military officials are allowed to request military paperwork. We went back with a letter from the recruiter saying when he would go in, and they had several other reasons to not let us out of our lease, including that because I wasn't going in, and basic would be here in Texas, they couldn't let us out. We had already explained that since I had no license, I couldn't work, and thus couldn't pay rent, which was why I was leaving, and my husband would be stuck on base. We finally had to rely on higher military powers, and told them that a recruiter's sargeant would call to straighten things out, and if that didn't work, the military housing department would call. Suddenly, out of nowhere appears the manager, (who was supposed to be gone all week) and she says that since we've given them written notice and a letter saying when my hubby goes in, we could break our lease.
Now my last (and current) issue has sprung up, a couple of weeks after I've left, and after mu husband has been shipped off to basic training. The grout around the tub in our apartment had turned orange, and was orange when we moved in. We told them when we arrived, nothing was done, and we told them again when we were leaving. They said that they wouldn't take it out of the deposit because it was "normal wear and tear" and we had let them know about it when we arrived. I recieved a call today saying that they want to charge me for it. I don't know how long this battle will rage, but if it takes too long, I'll just bring it to the courts.
