I am a current resident and moved here from NY. My wife picked this place as a temporary home while our house is being built in Alamo Heights. I would just like to illustrate a few pros and cons and a few thoughts.

Pros:

1. Within walking distance of various dining and entertainment establishments.
2. Neighbors seem to be nice people.
3. Pool is clean.
4. Grounds are decently maintained for a complex of this size.
5. I love the old trees and feeling of the neighborhood. It is safe to walk down the street any time of day.

Cons:

1. Rats in walls that can be heard chewing and scurrying around at night
2. Shower head is very low (shoulder height for me I am 6ft 2).
3. Tile in bathroom is cracked and very old. Patched, but with little effort to maintain a pleasing aesthetic value.
3a. No counter space in the bathrooms at all because there are no counters.
3b. Light switch is affixed to the only electrical outlet which you wouldn't want to turn on/off with wet a hand at risk of electrocution.
4. Wood floors are poorly maintained. Very old, squeaky, uneven, and stained. Apartments would actually benefit more from carpet as the wood can not be cleaned or sealed properly from tenant to tenant.
5. (My apartment's) Layout was very difficult to work with. The rooms were displaced with different sized, oddly placed windows throwing off any balance you may want to achieve with furniture placement.
6. Walls are not smooth and holes that have been patched and painted over can be seen.
7. The closet/storage space is nil.
8. There aren't enough outlets in any of the rooms.
9. VERY poor lighting throughout.
10. There are cats everywhere.

Overall these apartment are charging "Alamo Heights" prices yet it seems like the budget they had to restore them into livable condition was fished from shallow pockets. Everything within the units is circa 1975 and little has been done to bring them up to true "Alamo Heights" standards. We pay around 900$ a month for 900 square feet and to be honest its probably worth more like 700$ month. At least I would be a lot more comfortable paying that.

Then move. I have been here since 2001 and have heard nothing but the best for the apts. I know most everyone here. They would only live here and no where else. I have never, never heard anyone complain about the wood floors. Or rats. I have so much kitchen space I can't use it all. Painting is always well done. Office staff has always taken my requests and finished them. If any. Shower is fine, you are just too tall. You are just too ---- and don't realize when you have a good thing going.

I wrote the original post: Actually, I think these apartments could use a TON of work to be on par with the amount of rent they charge. I am comfortable with my rating and I do not think I am being overly critical. Living here will really make you miss all the little things you get when paying the same price for a newer apartment, or a duplex that has been properly renovated. Wood floors: I have lived on wood floors and can say with 100% confidence these are poorly maintained floors at best. Rats: They are here not much else to say about that. You here them at night and can see their dropping in the laundry area which is in my kitchen. Paint: I stand by my comment 100%. Coming from a newer apartment and old homes alike, I know it takes a little more time to smooth out holes and repaint. Maybe they didn't have that time to spend on my apartment? Shower: The placement of the shower head is a tough one to work around, granted. However, it IS a con if you are not a short person. If they do not take care of the rat problem, I plan to terminate my lease agreement with the help of a lawyer if warranted. In my opinion having rodents anywhere near my food area is unsanitary and will not be tolerated. Everything else I mentioned is tolerable until my lease has expired.

Can you tell me whether the rat problem has been solved? I am re-locating to San Antonio and was very interested in Sunset Ridge.

I don't live at Sunset Ridge now, but lived there from 1986 to 1998. It was the first apartment complex built in San Antonio, for the GI's returning home from WWII, which would make it circa 1945. An attorney, Mr. Hughes, owned it then. He kept the place just as it was built, same colors as from 1945, etc., and the place was immaculate. We had a front door to the street and a back door which led to covered parking. Then it was bought out and renovated. Personally, I feel they ruined the ambiance in the process of renovation. They took out the back doors to put in W/D connections (we had a laundry facility at the end of each covered parking section) and tore down the covered parking. The windows were all the same size and shape in the living, dining, and bedrooms, with smaller ones in the kitchen and bath. I visited every layout in the place in my 12 years there and none of them were "difficult to work with." I can only guess that your remarks are a result of the renovation. Personally, I love wood floors and think carpeting is "cheap." I can't believe you would prefer it over wood. I lived in two different apartments and the floors were beautiful and well kept in both. That wood is 3/4" thick, I believe, and just needs to be sanded and relacquered. It's perfectly good wood! Either you got the one lemon of all the apartments there or you're just too picky! When you're dealing with buildings that are 50 years old, they just don't have the outlets new places do. Think about it! What electric appliances were used in the bathroom in 1945? Hmmm, I can't think of any, which is probably why there is only one outlet. The same goes for the rest of the apartment. Irons were about the only things that were plugged in back then, and fans. Even televisions weren't common in those days. I think you should just move out and quit complaining, and let others move in who do appreciate the beautiful grounds and great neighbors Sunset Ridge has to offer. P.S. I do agree with you on the rent. I think I paid $350 in 1986 for a 1100 sq.ft. and $425 in 1998 for 770 sq.ft., but it might have been even less on both. You're getting taken!

To the person who wrote the original post,I AGREE with you!! I lived there from 2005-2006, and I had most of the problems you had. It was the worst rental experience I've ever had. Just look at the number of bad reviews! I had a BIG roach problem, the door to the bathroom wouldn't shut, and the floors were constantly flaking wax. Not only that, when I moved out, the front office tried to charge me $300 for the wood floors which were already in bad condition when I moved in. They did not succeed in getting $300 dollars from me. The showers were not fine, in response to the July 6, 2008 post. Potential renters should check them out for themselves, the drain is gross, and the shower head is too short, and I'm only 5'7! This is a forum for potential renters to read honest reviews about experiences people have had here. If anything, I think the original post was well written, but there is one thing I disagree with. Paying $700 dollars for this apartment would STILL be too high. I would say $300 is maybe its value, considering you will be living with rodents, unfriendly staff, and ROACHES.

I completely agree with the issues stated in this original post. I am a current resident here and have experienced several problems. The management is unhelpful, at best, at remedying these difficulties in a prompt and professional way. I would not recommend this apartment complex to my worst enemy. I cannot wait to get out of this lease.

I have lived at SS ridge for about a year now. I have two complaints; my neigbhors music can be heard and it is loud all the time. This complex is not built for loud young adults experiencing their first apt. I've gone through 2 nieghbors so far ( I live upstairs). 2nd; I did have roaches but they are what I call Tree roaches and they only began to appear as the climate became cooler (around SEP/OCT) and dryer. Then they went away. This IS San Antonio and unless you are living in a 300,000.00 house you will be seeing a few roaches. That first commentor seems like he got the LEMON of all LEmons. I love my apt., my wooden floors chipped and all, I love the windows that are on both sides not just a one side wall, I love the location, the other OLDER neighbors and I love the pool. The pool is a must. The staff are just the staff; you'd find anywhere. I am looking for a house now but I have enjoyed living in the 09 area.
