If you're in the CAP program and only here in SA for 9 months, then compared to your friends who live in Jester or some West Campus 70s fraternity house, you're living quite well with your own bedroom (this is something easily overlooked that dorm living cannot beat). Personally, I know my apartment (4 bedroom, 2 bath, potluck) is probably in the top 5% of the ones available here; our place wasn't that dirty to begin with and we've been religious about keeping it that way; the AC works fine - no rattling noises like my neighbor and it keeps the place easily at 69 F if you want it to during the hot days thanks in part to the good insulation. Yes, these apartments are pretty ghetto and hold nothing against places like Outpost (across the street) or Broadstone (2 miles down UTSA Blvd), but the location to campus is unmatched imo with class 8 min. away or 4 min bike ride. It's far enough to be off-capus unlike Chaparral or Chisholm (traditional dorms and not apartments) so you can easily have a bunch of people over to smoke or have a good time in general like we do. Also, the tours show you these wonderful sample apartments that are no way near what you get with hardwood floors (I know only 3 ppl who actually got these off a promise of "by 2008, all rooms"). Internet acc to some on here is snail-paced; def not, more like DSL - you can watch youtube vids with 15 sec delays, torrent movies at night to 120 kbps and in the day at 75 kbps, etc. Btw, no one uses the pool. This place sufficed for me. I wanted to get out of SA asap so I just picked Oaks w/o research and because by August most of the alternatives were filled.
Pros:
Very own bedroom, shared living room (get the college and home life at same time)
Cheap, but alternatives are better any day $450/month
Included utilities (leave your AC on all day! though shut off other stuff)
Internet (no roadrunner, but decent after 9 PM esp, can torrent movies till 12 PM)
Bathroom: take long (40 min) showers, no prob; share with one person only
Kitchen: keep off fresh 15 by making a Kashi pizza in the oven; turkey in the fridge'
TV: cable w/HBO
Location: I laugh at the ppl stuck in parking lot traffic (yep it gets bad if u have to drive, even using the Shuttles b.c you're still stuck) whilst I ride past them on a bike
Cons:
Bedrooms small; 9' x 9' approx so use space-making skills; bedlifts!
Internet: limits P2P like limewire apps, spoiled off fast cable back home
Bathrooms: moldy, so clean it yourself thorougly
Carpet: brown, stained, just cheap
Walls: you can literally punch through them lol, bring a powerful fan to block off external noise
Security: there were 2 muggings this year, but overall the UTSA cops have done a very good job; though I go to and from library at wee hours w/o concern; there's nice cars here too, Mercedes, Infinitis, Volvo, etc.
Laundry: have to buy a $2 card (available only during weekdays till 5 PM) and each laundry action takes $.75
Good Luck.
