Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
At first, I was just happy that my husband & I were back together. We are both in the military and were seperated for 8 months. We had no idea that we would be living in hell for a year.
We had signed a year lease with this apartment complex (then Summit Turtle Rock) to move in the 1st Of November 2003. But they asked us to give them alittle more time to prepare the apartment for us with new carpet & tile because the original tenant had been there for 10 years. We finally moved in a week later and the only thing that was done was the carpet. We also had to clean the apartment especially inside all the cabinets, they were dirty. Yes we had new carpet but the padding underneath was like a sheet of paper. They assured us that they were also going to change the tile because the old tile was peeling off the floor and had yellow stains. Well to make a long story short the workmen put the new tile over the old tile. Then the old crusty countertop of the master bathroom was painted over. We were given a walk through sheet to report everything that we felt was wrong (& to be fixed) & problems that were made be the previous tenant. We documented everything that had been done since we moved in like the new carpet, the tile, and resurfaced countertop. The one thing that really alamed us was a musty smell coming out of our daughters closet. When we reported this, all they did was send someone up & spray deodorant. It seemed that that the apartment was falling apart bit by bit because the microwave stopped working, the disposal stopped working, the apartment above us their shower was leaking down the wall, & the "new" tile started to peel up. Then we realized why they were being so cheap about everything because they got bought out by another company in the Spring of 2003.
We found out by all the new faces that were in the office one day when we paid our rent. Now the complex was Villas at Oakwell Farms. Well we thought that maybe this new company would start taking care of the existing problems. So we mentioned the musty smell & other problems with the apartment. The staff wasn't very friendly (except 1) and seemed more upset about the work orders that were giving then the living enviroment that their tenants were living in. Also we were told that the ementities now had strick hours & you to pay for a card to use them.
So we decided to start looking for a house we were expecting a new baby. The 2 bedroom apartment would be to small for 4 people and a cat. We were very upfront with the staff. We asked them specific questions like how much notice do you need and what if our home isn't ready be the end of our lease term. The staff told us a 30 days notice and we could go by a month to month basis.
We got our closing date on the house & we put in our notice to move. That was the first time that the staff pulled out our file and sat down to discuss that we were moving out. All of a sudden the 30 day notice (Villas policy) turned to a 60 day notice. According to our lease with Summit it was 60 days. We tried to argue that the point that a representative form their company told us 30 days. We talked to the Manager & she still wouldn't budge. We told her the very thing we were trying to avoid was going to happen morgage & rent at the same time. But it was abvious that she really didn't care. So we asked who her boss was & could we have his phone number. She said she didn't have his phone number but I could send her an email and she would give it to him. Well we never heard from her boss and we still never got a phone number.
By this point we were just ready to move because we had dealt with some much over the whole year. We cleaned the apartment better that we had moved in to it because we didn't trust the Villas at Oakwell Farms anymore. They seemed in it for the money & we knew that they would be picky about everything. Well we did the walk through & staff member commented on how great everything looked. So in my mind I thought great, all we will have to pay is the 2 months. WRONG! We had to pay a "paint prorate"($48.90), cleaning ($22.), and carpet cleaning($50.). We had to pay these people two months rent & extra charges. Also there wasn't any documentation of our deposit. We made sure that they wrote at the bottom of the charge sheet that we wouldn't expect anymore charges. We didn't want anymore "surprises" and we gladly left the complex with its musty smell closet, peeling tile, and paper thin padded carpets. We were no longer be giving them anymore rent for a 1200 sq ft apartment.
We have lived in several places and this was the worst experience we have ever had.
***A couple of months later (Jan 04), we got a bill from them saying we owed them more money.
