Not as bad as they make it sound

I lived in a unit in the back of the property, so I was well off the beaten path. I parked in a secluded courtyard which was secluded from public view. Parking spaces were narrow, but were covered and I never had a problem findind a covered one. I had a motorcycle and a car and didn't chain my motorcycle for the first 6 mo I lived there. A guy who parked next to me had a Ducati Monster and a BMW and someone stole his license plate off the Duck. This prompted me to start chaining the bike, but I never felt there was a security problem except for some graffiti one time which, I understand, was caused by a residents kid.

Let me address some of the other reviewer's problems:

Water cutoff- Yes, this happened quite frequently. I'd say on average once a week. Water line burst in front of my apartment and sent water cascading down the sidewalk into the parking lot for a few days one time. I'm not sure what caused all the water problems, but my building sure had its share of them.

Hot water- We were without hot water for a couple weeks. Didn't really affect me because I showered at the my gym, but it was annoying and if I hadn't had another place to shower I would have been pissed. Management did make another unit available to shower, but who wants to do that' Not a good solution. Richard, the manager, did tell me that they couldn't get a boiler to replace the broken one because of boiler demand from hurrican Katrina. Funny, after I finally called City Code Compliance, they had the problem fixed in a day. Hot water is a necessity as a tenant, not an option, so if this happens to you, don't mess around, just call City Code Compliance (Ruben Duron 210-213-9489). Even after boiler replace, hot water was still not up to snuff until I complained and they finally agreed to let me out of the lease w/no penalty. Ironically, about 3 weeks before I was due to leave, they came and fixed the hot water. Don't know what the problem was, but it was working great when I left.

Pot smokers- Didn't have a problem with these. If there were a bunch of them, they kept it to themselves.

Drug busts- Never saw one of these. In fact the entire 8 mo. I was there, I never saw a cop on the premise.

Dirty trash & pools- If someone was having sex in the pool, it wasn't me (dang). I was promised the 2nd pool would be up and running soon when I moved in. 8 mo. later, no work had started on it, but the pool that was there was fine, although small. They have a sister property with a much bigger pool that I was able to use. Trash was also not much of a problem.

Speeding and parking lot noise- I was tucked away in the back of the property, so I never really had a problem here, either.

Laundry rooms- They suck. Go to a laundromat or something.

Staff and maintenance was usually pretty helpfull. Didn't have great experiance with the manager, Richard Cerna, but he did revisit his original decision to charge me $64 for a broken blind when I asked him to look at the blind again because I couldn't find anything wrong with it. He ended up not charging me the money, but he did not show up at the appointed time for the walkthrough either so we could examint he apartment together.

All in all, not a great place, but not as big a dump as everyone is making it out to be. With the one month's free rent, it is one of the lower priced places I looked at and if you get a spot in the back, I think pretty safe.
