Yo!

Don't Move Here!

Expensive apartment that my wife and I signed a lease on because it was convenient to work while we were having a home built.
Be very careful when signing a lease with these people that you understand there is a 60-day moveout notice requirement. And you had better document every single deficiency at the beginning and end. Be sure to get a walkthrough.

At any rate, the apartment was liveable, but nothing special. While I thought it was too expensive to begin with, it became very painful when we were charged an extra $200/month to stay month to month while our house was being finished. And, yes, you're still stuck with the 60-day moveout notice even if you're monthly.

Finally, the house was finished and we were able to move out (after waiting 60 days). A few weeks after moving, we received a bill in the mail for damages to the apartment in excess of our deposit. What the .........''
Said they had to replace the carpet (doubtful at best), other smaller items, and charged us to replace a fiberglass composite bathtub that had a small chip by the drain. This chip was there when we moved in, and did not affect the functionality of the tub.
Called the apt. office to dispute the payment for the tub. "Maintenance" claims that the tub is now a hazard and could leak to the other tenants apts. Why wasn't it a hazard before we moved in' Why don't you just repair it, then' Why replace it' Office personnel say they will check with "Management" and see if it could be waived. We reluctantly pay the remainder with a note that we didn't feel we should pay for the tub, and to please let us know if that would be a problem.

No response from the apartment complex so all must be ok, right' Not. Two months later, we start receiving phone calls from a collection agency in Florida. Basically, our dispute meant nothing if we didn't request a walk-through. All our rights had been waived and we would have to pay whatever they claimed we owed. Wrote a letter to the apt. complex explaining the situation, and asked that they contact me to resolve it.
Of course, they did not respond to my letter, and the phone calls from the credit thugs continued full force.

The gist of this is, be very careful about getting involved with these people. Expect no reasonableness or discussions with management. Expect indifference and ineptitude.
