I have lived here for about three years...in three different apartments (my choice)...so I definitely know what is going on!
First off, yes, the apartments are old and things break. But, it is right across the street from campus so you can walk to school and the rent is CHEAP! I pay $395 for a one bedroom. And when things break, call the problem in and don't be an ass about it, it's not their fault! Yes, the maintenance is good and they get it done, for the most part, close to when you call it in.
Next..parking. I have read those people who are pissed when their car gets towed. But, ya know what is "pissier" ' Coming home, where YOU live and PAY rent, and finding NO SPOTS because people not liveing here are in them. Parking is VERY limited so please, tow away. And you know what, if you are a resident, you KNOW this, so it's your fault that your friend's car gets towed! Not to mention the SIGNS posted EVERYWHERE! I have had MANY friends over...some come late at night when the office is closed (so I can't get a pass)and stay till the AM and their cars don't get towed. Why' Because I know the parking rules and simply call their car in to the phone answering service! So, in the AM, Victoria has the info so if the tow guy is calling my friends car in, they won't tow it!
Noise...its a college town so what do you expect' I had THE WORST experience with noise last year. Both neighbors liked to play their music loud and upstairs liked to play the guitar at 3AM. To solve this, I would ask them to turn it down or leave a note and that would solve the problem. I have a neighbor now who plays the drums. Yes, the DRUMS. But, he was so nice about it and he asked if it was a problem to let him know and he only plays for like 5 minutes. So, if your are nice to people then they will be too! And if not, by all means call the po-pos! If they get called a second time, the fine is like a thousand bucks.
Management....Victoria...sooo nice. Has her days, but who doesn't. As for drugs and stuff' Doubt it. She has been a consistent manager for the time I've been here. Any time I need something, she has been there. We have had many talks and she is a great lady. I was also able to sign short leases due to graduation and am moving out of my lease a bit early, without any fees. Cade is pretty funny and definitely takes pride in his job. Look at the flippin' office! He has a Treehouse Wall of Fame or something! Maintenance are ok. And if you need something after hours (I have called a few times) they are there as soon as they can get there, which is comforting.
And yes, no screens does suck, but hello'! There are other ways. I tacked up screen to the outside of my windows and it works perfectly! Oh, and bills...well, my bills rock! I think the most I payed for electric was like $90. During winter it's like $20. The water is a bit high..the most I have paid is $40 so I don't get that. Never had problems with cable or the phone lines or anything.
So, take it from me. Yes, there are problems here because this place is old..like 30 years. But, there are lots of pluses and I haven't regretted living here, except for a bad roommate situation (so be careful who you live with!). When things go wrong, don't get pissed at the office because that won't help. I have been without water and without hot water more times than I'd like to admit, but getting pissed at those guys won't help the situation get fixed faster.
I am happy to be leaving...just because I am through with SM not the apartments and if I had to do it all over again, I would still live here.
I hope this will help anyone who is looking to lease. I am just being honest and real!
