Not a very good place

This place is not a good choice. It looks very nice on the outside, but I predict that without some major changes soon, it will only be a matter of time before this place resembles a slum.
Let's start outside of the apartment. Parking is an absolute nightmare, at certain times throughout the day and night you can forget about finding parking. The office staff has admitted that they don't even have enough parking for residents, let alone any guests. Luckily, our apartment is close to one of the very few areas where there is a small parking lot but it still doesn't make much of a difference. If you drive a medium-sized vehicle or anything larger you can forget about parking in about 75% of the spaces unless you want to take up two spaces or run the risk of not being able to get into your vehicle if people are parked on both sides. The complex has "no parking areas" and handicapped spaces that are a complete joke. People park in them with no regard to anybody. Even if every other space in the lot is open, people will still park in the striped area just so they don't have to walk as far. The office's response, send out a letter with a threat to tow. I believe they did this once and then just stopped. Then they tried painting "no parking" in 4-inch yellow letters, this worked magnificently (note...last sentence to be read with extreme sarcasm).
The complex complains about people not picking up after their animals, which is a slight problem. However, they say nothing about all of the assorted beer cans that are littered everywhere, cigarette butts thrown everywhere and bags of trash that sit by the dumpsters because people are too lazy to lift the lid of the dumpster to put the garbage inside. There's nothing like waking up in the morning to garbage strewn everywhere outside b/c overnight an animal decided to make a bag of garbage into a buffet. Also, the place is supposed to be a "gated" community. That is pretty much a joke. The gates have worked maybe a total of a month since we've been here. Otherwise, they just sit there wide open (except for one time where two of the gates weren't functioning and the only one that was had been run into by a drunk and bent where it didn't work, thus nobody could go in into it was fixed.
If you live on the bottom floor, you can expect your usual assortment of cmplaints. There are a lot of insects in the apartment. We've had trouble with spiders and centipedes especially. Some other people at the apartment have had trouble with scorpions. We also had trouble with ants because there was a gigantic ant hill built up on the outside of every building and they streamed in from the outside. You better hope that you get a very quiet upstairs neighbor because there is no insulation whatsoever. Our neighbor is not a very loud person, but she has a dog. Every time the dog runs, it sounds like a herd of elephants.
This place is section 8 housing, like another post mentioned and it is built with surplus material by whoever put in the lowest bill. I fully realize that in a brand new apartment, there are going to be kinks that have to be worked out. But the frequency with which they happen is alarming. We have been there almost a year and here's a partial list of what's gone wrong: master toilet leaked up through the tiles and got water everywhere, master toilet requires constant tinkering b/c it won't stop running, master bathroom is developing mold in several places despite the fact we keep it well ventilated, the electrical outlets in the kitchen have quit working mysteriously twice, our dishwasher began leaking until we fixed it ourselves, our hot water heater did not work upon move in, our smoke alarms have just randomnly gone off twice and they could not be turned off, the tile is already pulling up in several places, our air conditioner has gone out twice (speaking of the air conditioner--it is by far the loudest one I have ever heard), the foundation is leaking up through the carpet in the second bedroom, etc.
Finally, the office staff is the worst I have dealt with. The manager is rude, short-tempered and frankly very annoying. The rest of the staff is at best incompetent. The only exception is their maintenance man. Through our frequent need for him, we have found him to be extremely honest and very nice.
