closed out final but two years later I get a collection notice

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006
has this happened to anyone else. I closed out right when they were changing owners in may 2006. paid all balances in full. left forwrding address. was in contact with them for a couple of months due to still having an outstanding water bill. today i get n the mail a collection notice from a company in dallas that says i owe them money. it is too late to call the office to clear this up, but this is absolutely absurd. i left no balance and now two years later i get this weird collection notice....somthing fishy here. apartment had tree worms everywhere, bad parking, sewage back up in parking lot in backl . just a few things i remember.
