Yo!

The Breakers of Texas City

From: nextdoorneighbor
Date posted: 4/3/2004
Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2003

Fountain Lake is, I'm sure, a horrible place to live. It's old and pretty dirty, all the trashbins were overflowing down
to the street when I lived there.
It's right behind the apartment complex I used to live in called The Breakers.
Breakers aren't listed on this forum, so I decided to write the review for the Breakers here.

Here is what I know of Fountain Lake:
It has many drug dealers that are not always visible during the day but come out at night, entering through the back gates
of the Breakers.

This is what I know of The Breakers:
It was somewhat newly built (as apartments go) and very overpriced for the small amount of room they give you.
However, the high prices did not keep the drug dealers from living there, many of whom entered through the back gate and the
pedestrian door at the rear of the Breakers Apartments.
The first year was not too bad but the second year, a lot of very bad people moved in and automobile break-ins and mailbox
burglaries began happening.

When the criminals first started moving in in significant numbers, the good tenants started moving out.
So then, in a downward spiral, the apartment place became desperate to fill those empty apartments and that greatly increased
the rate of drugdealers moving in. It was like some kind of massive takeover. I guess they just told their friends that it
was a "great place" to live. Things may be better now but it was terrible when I moved out.
Expensive rent (unless it's just unaffordably sky-high) does not guarantee an apartment place that bad people will not move
in. People have bad kids (or bad friends and boyfriends who move in with the tenant later)- all this contributes to the
problem.

The leasing agents had a high turnover (which is fairly common in many apartments) and the management changed at least once
that I know of.
The grounds are beautiful and the maintenance staff was very kind but the guys were too thinly stretched out (there's just
too much work for only 3 or 4 people to do) and overall, I'd say it was a pretty good place to live if you don't count the
high rent, the fact that Fountain Lakes is behind it and the incident of the drug dealers moving in.
Texas City, like Galveston, has a lot of crime and lot of drugs. Unless you can afford one of those very, very expensive
apartment/condominium places, you are really not secure anywhere.

The Breakers and Fountain Lakes are located about 5 miles from "town" and was a fairly safe distance from the oil
refineries but you could occasionally still smell the stuff when there were accidents at the plant. If you have breathing
problems, living in "downtown" Texas City is really not an option for you, because it's too close to the refinery.

There were some new apartments being built on 146 (I think) or somewhere there in Tx City and maybe that will give these
other apartments some more competition.
