Don't be fooled by the model!

Years at this apartment: 2009 - 2009
I just moved in - my conclusion is that it's fine and that I'll enjoy living here overall, but there are a few ways that they take advantage of the naive college students who are the main tenants.
1. My roommates and I looked at the apartments in April. We asked how the AC was in the summer and were assured that it was fine. Well, we moved in in August and it was not "fine." I came from an apartment built in 1950, and the managers kept our ACs updated so that we could keep it as cold as we want. In the Centre, a much newer complex, the AC is very weak, *especially* upstairs where there are only about three tiny vents on the floor feebly sputtering out a little bit of cool air. We ran the AC constantly and could never get the downstairs below 80 or the upstairs below 85. When we asked the management they acted like we were stupid for expecting anything else. They did tell us we could buy a window unit and they'd install it - we'll see if that is true.
2. The model unit they show you is beautiful, brand new, clean immaculate - there is a big difference in a 10 year old apartment that's never been lived in and a 10 year old apartment that tons of rowdy college boys have lived in. When I stepped in to the unit I got I saw no fewer than 10 cigarette burns in the carpet, major burns on the kitchen floors and counters, a shattered stove eye, and a dining room light that just smoked when you turned the switch. There was a lot of wear and tear in the walls, and basically, it looked a good 10 years older than the model. However, I will say that the management seemed genuinely committed to fixing everything soon. Again, we'll see.
3. Another downside of seeing a model is that they might tell you you will be getting features you won't. We were assured that our unit was just as inclusive and in fact, even bigger, than what we were being shown. But, when we moved in, the promised fireplace was not there, there was no cable hookup downstairs, and there was no upstairs hallway like in the model. It would be best to insist on seeing the actual unit you'll be getting.
Another general downer is that there is tons of closet space upstairs, but no pantry space or shelves anywhere - the whole place feels poorly designed sometimes.
All of that said, this place is actually no *worse* than anywhere else I've lived, and it has a lot of amenities like washer/dryer, dishwasher, bay windows, pool/hot tub access, and balconies that make the Centre very desirable overall. Also very close to campus.
