Definitely not a dream home.

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006
When I first read the comments about Village Oaks, I thought to myself, 'it couldn't be that bad, these people are probably just embellishing their stories.' I was very wrong.
On the day I moved in, the first thing I noticed was that the air conditioner didn't work. When we complained, they sent out a student (who knew little about A/C repair, which became apparent the moment he started trying to work on the A/C). It took several tries, and it still didn't work. A family member who was with me at the time ended up fixing the problem. It was a simple one, that wouldn't even have occured if Village Oaks would have just maintained their A/C units properly.
Another thing we noticed was that the entire apartment was dirty. The carpets were covered in dirt, grass, and BB gun pellets, and the kitchen drawers and cabinets were full of rat feces.
No more than a month into the school year, we developed a roach infestation (I'm a clean-freak, so a messy apartment was not the cause). We complained about it to the management, and they put us on a waiting list(we had to wait until several more students complained about bugs and mice before they'd send out another exterminator). We waited for over a week, and finally, after my parents called and complained to the district officials of Village Oaks about how slow the management was to find a solution to our infestation problem, we finally got an exterminator. We still have roaches.
Our dishwasher does not work...not even after a maintence man came out to fix it. We also have a gap underneath our front door, which is going to complicate our lives in winter, I'm sure.
There's a lot of other things I could complain about, but those are covered by a lot of the other tenents. So I think most have gotten the basic idea right now.
If you are looking to attend TSTC, and are going to be living on campus, here's my advice to you. Apply for a lease at Lavaca Hall or the Red River Apartments early. They are the first to fill up because they're much cheaper than Village Oaks. I don't know about the living conditions, but seeing as I haven't heard any complaints from my friends who live there, I take it they may be better than VOA. If you don't, you may end up stuck like me and others like me: paying high rent (390 a month in my case), for less than acceptable living conditions.
