Horrible Place

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009
We rented our apartment in late 2007. First, when we moved in during the initial walk-about, we noted that there were some nicks and scratches on the walls. To that the management told us the "apartment was not new", (well duh...of course its not new) we did realize but we were pointing out that it and a few other items were not on their imperfections sheet (or whatever it's called) thus was it only not correct but dishonest.
Second, the staff has never been helpful to either my wife or myself. We have asked repeatedly to have several things fixed including a leaking faucet and some stove burners while someone came by once to fix (a band-aid fix I might add) the burners on the stove still to this day the stove has never worked right. Since they don't fix them we *might have to use a portable stove* Another item that needed to be fixed was the A/C in the summer of 2008. It took them almost three months and constant (I think almost daily) calls for them to do so.
Third, since we are college students the renewal price was quite high and so I inquired if there was anything I could do since utilities alone are $330. I received a not so nice e-mail from the manager Jessica saying to turn off the cable, internet and phone, turn down the heat and take cold showers to cut back on as many utilities as possible. She said she did it herself and it lowered her bill, but she is single so it's very hard to compare. Moreover, when we renewed the lease we were promised new shades for our windows. Even after repeatedly asking the management here they either could not or would not tell us when they would be installed.
After that my wife and I finally were fed up with the management and started looking for a new apartment. During our search, we found that Pinnacle was advertising apartments like ours on Craigslist for $150 less then what we are currently paying. When we confronted, management about it they offered to move us into a one bedroom apartment and which would have lower rent, and then take of an additional $44 for the next year. Of course we would have to pay for the moving fee for moving inside the complex.
When we gave our thirty day notice to management who, said that they required $1500 up front to break the lease. First off when we initially signed our lease back in 2007 the paper explaining the breaking the lease terms neither the paper nor Jessica said it was to be up front. My wife, and my father were both at the meeting as well and the manager and she seemed to indicate we just needed to pay the $1500 when we gave the keys back. Hearing about it now though...talk about unfair surprise. Now since our plans were based on that premise, we now have to pay an additional month's rent. This is not only unfair (as the manager misrepresented the contract) but is unacceptable. While it is true I did finally find the clause in our contract about paying up front, both my wife and my father remember that the manager just went over the actual contract quickly (touching on a few items...none of them about rent termination) and just had me initial places.
Our upstairs neighbors are noisy, with constant thump on the floor. Then one night a man from the same apartment came banging on our door to "turn down the base" he was hitting the door so hard it nearly knocked the pictures off the wall. We talked to the management about it. What did they do' NOT A THING!
Sure the location to UVU is great but not at the expense of comfort and maintaince. DO NOT LIVE HERE.
