It's not a bad place to live, but if you shop around, you can probably get a deal that gives you a lot more for the money. It's reasonable to expect a rent hike, especially if you got a move-in deal, but the increases are just outrageous. The utilities aren't metered, therefore, you will pay for common usage areas. A lot of people have left because of this issue.
First, the building is old and there are serious plumbing issues (especially on the lower floors), as well as outdated appliances. Especially in the kitchen and the washer/dryers break down a lot. Plenty of hot water, but the pressure can be very light. If you look on the floor areas you can see cracks and the walls are creepy. The outside windows are always dirty. The gym equipment is really bad and the media center PC's are super slow. I just don't believe they've done a good job keeping up inside the building.
There is plenty of free parking, which is rare around here. The car wash and vaccum area is also great. The grounds outside and the inside lobby areas are very impressive. And the elevators work well and are spotless. During Winter, they didn't do a good job salting the grounds or plowing. People did have bad falls.
Security has become an issue. They give you an access card for the front and side entrances, as well as the parking lot entrance/exit. Make sure they activate it, because a lot of people move-in and the card they get doesn't work. I never felt unsafe in the building, but it was pretty easy for anyone to walk in without access card. You will have to work with the front desk to obtain a visitor parking pass, which can be a real pain.
The new leasing office staff is OK, but you have to treat them with kid-gloves or you'll get attitude. They're all sweet and syrupy when you take a tour, but that'll change once you move in. There's a lady at the front desk who's kinda rude. You will have to get packages from her as well as call-in maintenance requests, so be careful that you don't rub her the wrong way.
The units are very quiet and you won't get neighbor noise. But, there are odors that will creep into your unit, especially if you have neighbors who cook a lot. I never saw cockroaches, but there are problems with bugs crawling out of ceilings, as well as mold.
They have very nice custodian and maintenance staff. Minor repairs are handled quickly, but anything major will take a while. You will have to push the issue.
If they adjusted the rents for the reality of what they give you, it would be a decent place to live. However, I suggest shopping around so you can pay less and get a lot more.
