Be VERY Cautious

This is quite lengthy, but I had quite the living experience living at this place...

My roommate and I moved into 3001 Park Center in the beginning of October 2003. We were extremely impressed with the place and we were excited to be able to upgrade to "luxury" living. We had a friendly doorman that everyone loved, front desk service available at any hour, and free animal sitting for when a resident was out of town. This all changed after three months of living here when a new management company took over. The doorman moved and he was never replaced. The front desk seems to only have banker's hours. I feel like I have to rush home if I know I have a package coming because the front desk closes so early now. And the change that frustrated me the most was the discontinuation of the pet sitting. That feature was one of the main reasons why I chose this apartment complex. I had to pay $300 upfront (non-refundable) plus $25 extra every month for my cat. I know this is a somewhat normal price to pay for a cat here in the area but at the time, I felt that it was more justifiable since I was getting a service out of the money I was paying. Now I'm just bending over and handing my money over to them for an animal that never caused a single problem...for a 12-month lease, I've given them an extra $600.

In March of 2004, we noticed that our carpet in front of the washer and dryer was wet. Maintenance was quick to respond but couldn't figure out where the leak was coming from. As time went on, our white carpet started to turn black, green, and rust color from the mold that was growing as a result from the leak. It spread so far out that my roommate couldn't even get to her room without wearing shoes because the mold and saturated carpet spread to the front of her door and around to our counter bar stools. I feel that maintenance was dedicated to trying to get this problem fixed, but the problem was obviously beyond their capabilities. Management was lax on getting a plumber into our apartment to check it out. It took them 5 MONTHS before they actually fixed the problem! We had to hound the manager several times to try and get this fixed. After being relatively patient during this ordeal, my roommate and I figured out that we paid $7,575 in rent during that 5 months to live in this so-called "luxury" apartment, that was far from luxury conditions, but was unsanitary and a health hazard. We only felt that it was fair to get some sort of compensation for what we had to deal with, such as 1 to 2 months of free rent. They wouldn't budge. They said the only way they would give us a month of free rent was if we re-signed our lease for another 12 months...promising to give them another $18,180! We declined and we're moving out. This proves that they are all about profit and not about their tenants.

Now here's the positive side to this apartment complex:

-Our apartment was very clean when we moved in...of course, that was under the old management, so I don't know if the standards are still the same.

-The computers in the business room used to be very slow and frustrating, but within the past month or so, all three computers have been replaced with new ones. Now they're really fast and convenient.

-Apartment grounds and common areas inside the building always look immaculate. Plenty of free parking.

-Large, spacious rooms and large windows.

-The workout center at the building is no good, but there's an awesome gym right across the street! I got an incredible deal through the apartment that allowed me to have a $25 membership vs. $80 for outside members...but I have a feeling that that might have changed since I got that deal with the old management company. I don't foresee this management offering the same deal.
