my rent almost doubled

I have actually lived here for a very long time... over 8 years. if i were to renew my lease, it would be close to twice what it was when i first moved in. when i moved in, all utilities were included. now they are not. and not only are they not included, they "estimate". it's crap. i'm never home, i do not have a washer & dryer, i don't cook, therefore my dishwasher runs about once a month... i did get a $3 a month credit since i don't have a washer & dryer. ARE YOU KIDDING ME'''' oh, and the washer & dryer in the basement cost $1.75 to wash, $1.75 to dry, but count on adding more money b/c your stuff won't get dry for 1.75 unless you're washing one towel and a pair of underwear.

i don't often hear my neighbors, just the ones above me, so i guess i can't complain too much about that. but when they've been loud... oh boy it's loud.

security lights on the back of the building come on for about 10 seconds before they overheat and go out. thankfully my apartment is on the 2nd floor. i'd be having fits if i lived on the ground level.

a few months ago i came home to find my bathroom totally full of water. it happened 4 more times and it took them almost a month to fix the problem. the apartment managed would not return my calls. i'd be on hold forever waiting on her and listening to how important i was as a tenant. what crap! anyway, my ceiling was caving in and it was soft to the touch, especially around the exhaust fan. they did not replace the drywall, just spackled where i'd pushed through it. it's got to be full of mold and mildew, not to mention whatever was in the water that soaked it in the first place. i was told it came from the shower drain of an upstairs apartment. do you know what people do in their showers' gross.

rent. in my humble opinion, rent hikes totalling almost $700 in 8 years is ridiculous. they'd argue my rent didn't go up that much, but remember, i was not paying $125 a month in utilities when i first moved in, they were "included". last year when i renewed i went round and round with the manager, pointing out that they'd avoided all turnover costs with my unit, no one had painted in 8 years... my neighbors don't complain about me, i pay my rent on time. she offered to paint my apartment. i'm sure glad i said no b/c when they *fixed* my bathroom and painted, they didn't cover up anything and all kinds of things now have charming drips and spatters of paint on them.

parking. i saw someone had an issue with parking. by my building, i rarely have trouble finding a spot. BUT, the guy who rented my place to me told me that guests could park across from my building. i clarified with him and told my mom to park there when she visited about a month after i'd moved in. i had not noticed the marked guest spots by the clubhouse, nor did i think not to trust the employee that told me where my guests could park. monday morning we reported my mom's car stolen. oh no, not stolen, it was towed. when i called to complain, they told me tough luck. i told them that's where my guy told me she could park, they took no responsibility for poorly educating their staff.

heating and cooling... my a/c was out for 3 days recently. try getting a decent nights sleep when it's 85 and stuffy in your apartment. also, here, you either have heat OR a/c. it's never your choice. this is a first for me, but maybe it's common in this area. someone recently told me that it was a "cheap blanking system". they switch the system over in the spring when they feel there will be no more cold weather, and back to heat in the fall when they think we're done with hot weather. those times of year can get really uncomfortable in the apartment, though lack of a/c is a lot more miserable than lack of heat in my book.

ventilation. basically, if you turn on that fan over your stove, it blows all your cooking odors into your neighbor's apartment.

and in the spirit of honesty, my apartment is large and nicely laid out. closet space is tremendous. the grounds are nicely kept, i myself don't see the rats i see other people talk about. i've also never had any insect issues.

so, i've spent 8 years living here. it's not all bad, it's not all good. the major issue i have is the outrageous rent. we're not in old town, for pete's sake!

I agree, those utilities are a joke, they should be clearly spelled out what they usually run. Those rent increases are not justified.

The utilities are all averaged and not metered so if you never use your heat or a/c or electric that much your still paying your neighbors if they choose to leave their lights on all day and all night. This system is not fair to the rest of us.

Their rent increases, which are typically 10-30%, are truly unjustified.
