ARCHSTONE and the Demise of the Espalanade

Well, this apartment community was a nice surprise when it opened a couple of years ago. Nice floorplans. Good parking (in a garage). A pretty courtyard. Good location. Nice and coopertative people in the office. Good maintenance response. And then, something...happened.
Well, it all began with the previously mentioned (and well documented) garage leaking problems. The white, cement-based stains that drip-drip-dripped on your car every night do not come off w/out the aid of an auto detailer. It even got to the point where an area detailer left their business cards on everyone's car, knowing they could make a killing.
Well, the Esplanade tried to fix the problem. Then, Archstone decided to buy the property. They promised a fix. What we got instead was over a year of construction (it looks like they practice missle-testing there)...the once beautiful courtyard was turned into filthy mess. The workers, and I use that term loosely, put in a good five hours a day to fix the problem...and they still are. The noise is unreal. The buildings shake due to the jackhammering.
But, perhaps worst of all, is the new management team. Rude, inconsiderate, clueless, and with no empathy for tenants. This is not an exaggeration. Great business model! I know we won't get rocket scientists in there, but is a GED level brain too much to ask for'
Plus, because of the mess, management seems to be offering deals to anyone off the street. Lowering rent, and bringing in a wide variety of tenants (the kind that scrawl graffiti in the elevators, leave trash on your car, break glass (and leave it) in the garage, and generally act as obnoxious as possible in every situation). Archstone needs the money, so they're taking it. This is a stark contrast to the Esplanade days. The neighbors were a little more affluent, and were certainly more considerate. It's comforting to know your neighbors won't trash your car when you leave it every night.
It was a really good beginning, that went horribly wrong. Sad.
