Good value for the money

My husband and I have lived at Cameron court for almost three years, and we absolutely love it. Having lived in the Washington area all our lives, we looked at a lot of apartment complexes before we moved here. We chose Avalon primarily because of its location within walking distance of the metro and price. We live in the Cameron unit, which is the smallest one bedroom, but for about $1200/month is a good value when compared to similar apartments.

The community amenities are the real attraction for us, though, with a heated pool and spa open 5 months of the year as well as a business center with printer, fax, copier, and high-speed Internet access, an indoor basketball half-court, and a great fitness center.

Plus, this is one of the few apartment complexes that allows large dogs, and it provides great amenities for dogs, including a fenced-in dog park. We just got a golden retriever and have realized how crucial it is to live in a dog-friendly apartment complex with space to walk your dog and let it run around without a leash. However, the one downside to the dog situation is that we were not aware that dogs over 25 pounds are only allowed in first-floor apartments--and there is a rent premium dog owners must pay. However, the leasing consultants are allowing us to stay in our current unit until the end of our lease, at which time we will either transfer to a first-floor apartment or buy a home.

Actually, the best compliment I can give Avalon is that if the units were converted to condos, I would immediately buy one (albeit a larger unit than the one I'm renting). This is a great community and I would recommend it to anyone--particularly those who want an apartment complex with a lot of amenities and can commute by metro to work.

However, keep in mind that the metro and Amtrak trains run right behind the complex and the noise can take some getting used to. Also, if you don't like dogs, this probably isn't the place for you.
