You are disposable to Avalon

Before I begin, please know that I am (thankfully) not a resident of Avalon at Cameron Court. I applied for an apartment in March 2007, and got burned pretty bad.

Just some quick facts: (1) It is not a gated community. The gate was wide open every time I went by there. (2) The people in the leasing office rotate between Avalon locations, and I had found it nearly impossible to get a hold of the same person twice, and I had to annoyingly explain my story each time I called.

My biggest frustration:

(3) The application I signed was not explained well. It was my understanding, upon signing it, that I had 72 hours to back out and not lose my security deposit, and 10 days to back out before the reservation fee would kick in. I backed out on the 10th day (due to job reasons), to avoid the reservation fee. I was then told the reservation fee kicks in after 72 hours, and I owed them a few more hundred dollars. I was threatened from the beginning with a collection service if I refused to pay promptly. I asked if, due to my particular job circumstances, they would waive the remainder of the reservation fee above my security deposit. I have an excellent credit history and would have gladly given my business to Avalon in the future (despite my recent frustrations, they are VERY nice units). They said they could not waive any part of the fee, regardless. I called the regional office, and was told the same thing.

Based on my experience, Avalon seems like a big company (a very big company) that treats its potential tenants as disposable, at least that's how they treated this potential tenant. I am a recent college grad and have been renting my entire life, both in the DC area and in Illinois. I have NEVER run across such an inhospitable company.

In closing, if you're looking for nice apartments in the Alexandria area, I looked into The Reserve at Eisenhower and also Riverside Apartments. I found their policies and leasing offices MUCH friendlier to potential tenants. They are both just a short walk from the metro, both clean and well-kept, and are both genuinely gated communities.
