I have lived in Bartons Crossing for 4 years and plan to renew my lease. In terms of other places I have lived, I have enjoyed living here. There are a wide variety of opinions about this place. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think some people's views are way too biased to be considered valid.
Here are some of my comments:
- I'm not sure what people mean by thin walls. I haven't heard much from my neighbors at all. Yes, once in a great while my neighbor plays his stereo a little louder than I would like. My bed isn't near any neighbor's adjacent walls. My apartment faces Van Dorn. You can hear the traffic but it's muted. I would not get an apartment facing the parking lot. It's a lot noisier - this is not something management can control.
- Parking can be difficult without an assigned spot. It's getting better. Again, management does what it can but some people just feel they are entitled to the weirdest things. For instance, people are forever double parking in front of Building 3 which makes it impossible for others to access the garage. Management will help but if it's afterhours, my recommendation is to call the police. There are clear "No Parking or Standing" signs and the police respond quickly.
- Security is good - as long as people living in the buildings keep the doors closed. I haven't ever had a problem with solicitors. Some people will prop a side door open a crack if they are out with their pet but for the most part they shut the door behind them and are usually in range of the door.
- Pets. This is a pet friendly community. Most people have dogs and/or cats. In a perfect world, everyone would clean up after their dog but it doesn't happen. Management has tried to enforce the law but it cannot police everyone. The problem is the owner and in one case, management did move the woman who felt it was perfectly legitimate to have her dog bark at 6:30 am out on the balcony. If you don't like animals, you may not want to live here.
- I am not a high-maintenance type of person. I have certain expectations and if they are met, I'm fine. Maintenance and the building staff have done fairly well. I have had to have my sink replaced, the refrigerator and washer/dryer repaired and the ceiling repainted (upstairs neighbor issue). These were done very well.

I agree parking is a problem if you only have one garage space. Up until last weekend, all the neighbors would park in our lot at night because they know they won't be towed. Not anymore, Barton's started enforcing parking policy last weekend. Now if we could get the cars that have expired licenses plates towed out, all would be cool.
