Refused to deal with crime and roaches, then sued me and perjured themselves

Years at this apartment: 1994 - 2004

I lived in Beacon Hill Apartments from June 1994 - December 31, 1994 and dealt with several serious issues before breaking our lease and moving out.

First serious problem: roach infestation

In the time I lived there, we dealt with a serious roach problem that was never solved. Calling building management would result in ONE apartment being sprayed. Roaches moved to the next door apartment, then came back as soon as the insecticide wore off. It never occurred to the management to spray the WHOLE building at one time. All the roaches do is play musical apartments while largely dodging the insecticide.

Second serious problem: drug dealers and domestic violence

After reporting the criminal element and obvious drug-dealing in a downstairs apartment, building management refused to do anything about the problem. "Customers" loitered outside the doorway, in the hallways and around the parking lot all hours of the day. The same individual dealing drugs out the apartment would also physically assault his wife in the common areas on a regular basis. Repeated reports to the police and building management resulted in absolutely nothing but an occasional police visit to the offender's unit.

After repeated notice to building management about the unhealthy roach problem, drug dealing, and constant violence, I presented Elizabeth Johnson, the property manager with notice of intent to vacate. She promptly demanded a $100 processing fee which is not mentioned in the lease. As such fee is not mentioned in the lease, I would not pay it. She refused to accept the notice of intent to vacate and also refused to point out where this fee is required on the lease.

I stayed on one more month and again attempted to vacate premises. The same response. I left the notice of intent to vacate on her desk, despite her objections and moved my family to a safer environment.

Ms. Johnson ruthlessly pursued us, demanding six months back-rent in court and along with her nasty attorney, attempted to intimidate my pregnant wife (on the tail-end of a very high-risk pregnancy) prior to the hearing. We were forced to pay one month's rent for breaking the lease. The court verbally reprimanded Ms. Johnson for misrepresenting the facts in the case and lashed out at her attorney for telling us that we have no right to leave an unsafe environment, even when the building management refuses to fix the problem. As she was exiting the courtroom, Ms. Johnson gloated and mocked my wife, thinking she had won some great victory.

I wouldn't recommend this band of scoundrels to my worst enemy. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
