My honest experience

My boyfriend and I have lived at Beacon Hill for about 9 months now. Our rent is about 1265 for 2 bedrooms, including utilities, but when our lease is up I expect it to go up to about 1315.

All in all, it's a decent place. We have had the occasional noisy neighbor, but nothing to go ballistic over. I've never seen a roach or a mouse, though I did see a spider yesterday (first one I've seen since we moved in). The kitchen and bathroom are a little dated, but not terrible. The living room is a bit small but our large master bedroom makes up for it. When we moved in, they had just replaced all the carpeting, which was nice. The closet doors are a little dated, too, but with a little love they work all right.

As far as my experience goes, I haven't been impacted by any crime or gangs. The past 9 months have been crime free, so I'm not sure why other people complain about crime and gangs and such. There are a lot of families here, which means a lot of kids. All-in-all the kids are fine. Occasionally you can hear them playing in the green areas in the afternoons, but its not a terrible nuisance. My only complaint about children is that one day I walked to my car to find wads of gum spit on the roof of it. I am assuming it was children...or disgruntled bubble gum bandits...who knows. The gum came off, no damage done, and nothing like that has happened since.

We did have a few problems with the water here for about a month or two. We'd wake up occasionally to find there was absolutely no hot water (in January), which was really unbearable. Turns out they had to do some major maintenance to the pipes. While they worked we had to do without water, but only between the hours of 9 and 5, and only for a couple of days. They sent out notices about the work ahead of time.

I haven't had any terrible or wonderful experiences with the office staff. They do host social events for the residents every now and again, but we've never gone. Kathy is the lady who went over our lease with us. She was friendly, if a bit scattered seeming, and accommodated us nicely. The maintenance guys are friendly. Our neighbors are pretty friendly, when we happen to see them, which isn't often.

So there you go. Not stellar, but not dismal either. A fairly safe, clean, decent place to live. Route 1 to one side, the rest surrounded by suburbs. About 2 miles from Huntington Metro and easy access to bus routes. We're fairly pleased with our apartment. We may move when our lease is up, but only because my boyfriend's job transferred him further away and this location isn't as convenient as it was when we moved here.
