Some things never change--even after 18 years

Beacon Hill. I was an 18 year old airman in 1991 and Beacon Hill was the place where I rented my first apartment. Rent seemed high by Texas standards, but COLA and VHA covered it with a roommate. It was noisy, and I rarely slept all night. My next door neighbor was nice to me, but a street hood. He always had a selection of jewelry, CD's, and VCR's for sale. His family did feed me many times on holidays though, and he did furnish me with the latest titles and electronics cheaply. I did like being close to the mall nearby and also the Giant Grocery. Management then were extremely condescending. I have come up the social ladder a bit since then, but a Neiman Marcus clerk has nothing on those folks. I still remember how snooty and rude they were 18 years ago in the rental office. They were even snooty as I tried to rent a little two bedroom dump that was close to work. They acted like they were brokering land in zip code 90210. They were probably exhausted from tenant complaints, so I do feel some compassion. The pool was really nice. No bugs or mice ever that I can remember. I never felt unsafe, but I was too young to know any better. One word of advice with 20 years of rental experience all over the country: Sometimes $150.00 a month more is well worth the headache dealing with a lesser property. I would never live there now, if I had the means to afford something slightly more expensive. I can't believe they charge $1200.00 a month now! Holy Cow! Move to Texas, rent is cheap out here, and we actually have jobs that pay!
We used to get some good furniture for our place by the trash can at the complex, in fact, our apartment was completely furnished with other folks unwanted furniture.
I was poor and happy then. Beacon Hill will always have a place in my heart, but I'm glad now it is a distant memory.
