I lived at Brookdale for 3 years and finally got fed up with all the problems and left. Rent and utilities are cheap and it seemed nice when I first moved in but then I realized the true problems. To make it easy, I'll list the problems:
1) Cockroaches. When my neighbors moved out, I got cockroaches and took a long time to get rid of them.
2) Squirrels broke through the patio screen door multiple times and ate food off my table. I had the screen replaced for the first summer but the second summer it happened, it was pointless so I kept masking tape over the hole. Worse than that, a squirrel got into the utility closet and had babies. I would wake up in the middle of the night to scratching sounds. I reported this to the rental office multiple times and all they did was check for squirrels. Finally I got a smart maintenance person to call me while he was there and for me to describe to him how to fix the vent on the front of the utility door to keep the squirrels from getting in there.
3) Parking. If you get home after 7pm, good luck finding a spot. I had to park along the street multiple times and my apartment was at the opposite end of the complex.
4) Towing. My roommate and I were both towed for different reasons. I was out of town and I didnt have my city sticker and was towed for that from the parking lot. My roommate had a temporary parking permit and was towed at 1am the day the temporary permit expired. It was the rental office's fault for not giving her a permanant one in the first place.
5) Car damage. I had a new car and would find scratches and dings almost every day on my car. I got a nice big one the week before I moved out thanks to my neighbors how have no care for their fellow beings. And there is usually residents working on their cars every week.
6) School traffic. If you dont leave well before or after school starts, then good luck getting out of the parking lot. I had to waid 10 minutes some times just for the crossing guard to stop school traffic so I could get out of the parking lot.
7) Mice. I got rid of them by setting up my own mice traps.
8) Visitor parking. Dont plan on having too many people come to visit at one time because the visitor lot is inconvient unless you get a pass for them to hang in their car during their office hours. Or your guests will be parking along the street and fighting residents for those spots too.
9) Neighbors. The only neighbors I would say hi to were the neighbors children and the guys who clean the trash up out of the parking lot. Everyone else kept to their own ethnic cliques.
10) Laundry. Laundry room seems sketchy in the bottom of the buildings and price is expensive. There was usually a wait to do a load. I ended up taking my laundry home to my parents and doing it there.
11) Exploading toilet. I returned to the apartment one weekend to find that maintenance had unclogged a neighbors toilet and the snake broke the back out of my toilet splattering waste all over my bathroom and damaging the fixtures. They were quick to replace my toilet but did a poor job cleaning up the waste in my bathroom and did not replace my rug and trashcan that they ruined. I'll attach pictures.
I think I covered all the cons so I'll throw in a few pros. The pool is big and nice but the attendants cannot speak english and having visitors use it is a hassle. The updates to the apartments are nice and the rooms are also a good size for the price. The balcony is bigger than any anyone elses I know.
