Old construction, cheap fixtures - not worth it

Well, after my third consecutive lease renewal increase (totaling $159 PER MONTH!) I'm out of here. It just isn't worth it anymore. Almost $1600 for an old-construction townhouse that doesn't include ANYTHING' My unit has NO cable outlet upstairs at all, no phone outlet in the "master bedroom" (which is cramped with just a queen bed, nightstand, and dresser). The only grounded outlets are in the kitchen, so if you use the 2nd bedroom or 3rd bedroom (I've seen bigger walk-in closets) as an office, you have to put in a grounded adaptor outlet and hope you don't cause an electrical fire. When the outside temperature is in the mid-80s or higher, the underpowered air conditioning unit can't keep up with the heat. The upstairs is pretty much uninhabitable from about 1pm to 7pm in the summer months. And don't be fooled with their website claim about "express bus service" making downtown DC and the Pentagon "minutes away". It is NOT "express" bus service, and the #8 bus only runs during rush hour inbound to the Pentagon in the mornings Mon-Fri, and outbound from the Pentagon Mon-Fri during rush hours, which frequently takes over half an hour just to get to the Pentagon, where you transfer to Metro rail to get into DC. The only other option during the day or weekends is the Dash Bus to either Van Dorn or Braddock Road Metro, or Metro Bus #25 (Mon-Fri only) to Van Dorn Metro - definitely NOT "express" bus service to either the Pentagon and DEFINITELY not to DC. Washer and dryer in unit is nice, but it's apartment-sized and doesn't take much to fill it up. The kitchen has LESS than minimal cabinet space. I think most cabinet space went away to make room for the dishwasher, washer, and dryer. (It was also extremely ironic that the day I filled out an application for another apartment elsewhere Brookville suffered yet another of these 1-3 hour mystery power outages in the middle of the hot day.) All in all, not all too terribly bad a place, but with rates now approaching $1600 a month - definitely definitely DEFINITELY not worth it, in my opinion.

Lived here?

And yet another person complaining, but look how long you have lived here. Grow up and get over it. Nothing is more sick than an adult who complains and does nothing about it.

Two years? I renewed my lease ONCE - and that was before the neighborhood starting going downhill, and when they wanted ANOTHER big hike in rent - I DID something about it - I MOVED. So, go screw yourself, Shaniqua.

We are sorry to see you go. You have the option to upgrade your townhome at anytime. We have update all the electrical panels and installed GFI's in all kitchen's and bath's. Any power outages that happen are not Brookville responsiblity please contact Dominion Power for any questions regarding the outages. You are welcome to have your internet or cable provider add any outlets that you need in other rooms of your home. If you have any other concerns please contact us at 703-370-1330. Have a great day.

I lived there long ago (1957 - 1959)at 648 Ripley and again (1962 - 1965)707 Ripley when things were incredibly great & a lot cheaper! Is the little brook and the woods still there? It was so lovely back then and peaceful!! Margie

GFIs in all kitchens and baths?? I think not. My downstairs bathroom does not have a GFI. It does not have an electrical outlet at all!

PARKING: Yeah, this place is NOT good for those who have roommates or maybe a small family, anyone that has more than one car, consider yourself screwed! The parking is a damn mess! Only one person can park on BT property whether it's in the parking lot or on the service road. I don't know a single soul that does not have at least two cars in their household in the DC metro area. If you're forced to park on the city's streets you will be forced to become a hermit. Coming home after 6 pm is like hell, you can't find a parking spot that's near your home (trust me, I'm no stickler for parking next to or in front of my house) can be troublesome. You may have to park around the corner on another street about a 1/2 mile from your home. BT SHOULD speak with the city concerning striping lines for parking spaces on TANEY and the cross-sectioning street so that people who never learned how to parallel park can have something to look at when parking, but of course they don't give a damn. Also, you will notice that your car will get a few dings than you really want to see on them due folks parking any kind of way. SAFETY: Although the neighborhood is pretty safe, this can be a safety problem for women walking alone after dark, so consider your days of clubbing nonexistent. SPACE: The homes are old as dirt, I've been told that they were initially built for military families in the beginning but of course, anything in Alexandria built in or before the 60s is almost smaller than a barn house. Don't expect too much room. When you're looking at the place without furniture, it always seems bigger than what you actually need to bring in the room, so don't expect to fit much in the rooms/closets. MAINTENANE: You don't get much of a yard (if that's what you're looking for), just some patches of grass and a bush that will barely be maintained by the servicemen that they employ to cut the grass two inches above ground (I find that funny). Don't expect to move in these places ready to install a telephone line, yeah, maintenance rips the cable cords and telephone jacks out, so you're forced to get new ones (don't go through Verizon, it used to be 90 per jack, it cost me $400 so I'll have the pleasure of ripping them out when I leave). I've never had a problem with getting prompt service from maintenance so if you've not had your maintenance problems taken care of in a timely manner, you must've pissed off the red head in the management office. RENT: The rent does go up each year you sign the lease. If you have a roommate, beware that you have to turn your rent checks in at the same time and if your mate bounces a check its counted against the both of you. It would be nice if you could electronically pay your rent, instead you have to go pay for money orders (trust me, you would want to use money orders here). CHILDREN: I don't hear many children playing in my section of the neighborhood, I think it depends on the part of the community your in. Took my nephew to the "playground" it was nothing more than just an old swing set(I'm sure it still has what's left of it's original lead-based paint). Adding wood chips to this does not spruce it up and its in a place where you would definitely need to keep close contact with your child. It's practically in your neighbor's backyard. If children are such an issue to this community why not create more play areas or tell renters that children are not allowed. MANAGEMENT: I haven't had any real troubles with the management office, they will flood your damn mailbox with reminders about parking (as if we're dumb) and children playing in unofficial play areas. BOTTOM LINE: You CAN get a better deal renting a house somewhere else in the area especially if you have children and more than one car.
