I'm from a small city, so paying for a studio apartment what one would invest as a house payment back home was sheer culture shock. But it was the most affordable one that we could find for my friend, in a clean building, in a neighborhood that was relatively safe (we researched online beforehand for crime reports). She lived there two years and I stayed with her several times during that period.

I must be very unobservant, 'cos I still can't place where the detention center might have been. Maybe tucked back somewhere nearby' Obviously, we never had a problem with it being there.

The office staff were wonderfully helpful, both before my friend moved in and after. Maintenance, as everyone mentioned, was excellent. One small problem with the ventilation in the bathroom and a resulting bit of mildew. No pests! Very little noise. My friend lucked out with the floor she was on and the location of her balcony, overlooking the tidy greenspace in front of the building.

Bus stop is right across the street, with a 5 minute ride to the metro station. With no car, the trek from the grocery store--uphill with a full cart--was sort of a pain, but one way to walk off the Entemann's.

My friend moved from Alexandria to DC because the combination of the increased rent and daily commute was impossible. And now she's moving away from DC beacuse that was of course even more expensive, even without the tranportation costs. (And what's with people advertising apts for rent in DC but failing to return phone calls and e-mails')

P.S. I have to put a plug in for the Mobil gas station owner on the corner. He may not know it, but I think his establishment helps contribute to safety in the area, as it provides good lighting for people coming off the bus at night. And he and his employees provide friendly service. I'll miss the Christmas Pegasus.
