You can do better...

I lived at Foxwood Place for about two years. Overall, I would not recommend living there, but there are definitely worse apartments out there, too.

Pros:
- Great location with respect to 395, 495, etc.
- Noise level is great. Once I shut the door to my apartment, I could rarely hear my neighbors. I could occasionally hear the person above me walking around and people outside, but the noise level is much better than other apartments I've lived in and friends apartments I've visited.
- Maintenance staff is wonderful. They always responded to requests quickly and did an excellent job.
- The pool is really nice. The current leasing company recently renovated the area around it.

Cons:
- As other people have mentioned, the current leasing company increased the rent quite a bit in the last year and a half. Increasing the rent is obviously normal, especially since they renovated all the apartments (although that was a huge inconvenience). However, the increase percentages have been just high enough that the apartments, evenly newly renovated, are not worth it anymore.
- My 1BR apartment was tiny for the money I was paying. The kitchens are insanely small. There are literally two tiny spaces for cutting, mixing, etc.
- The building is on an old HVAC system, where they switch the entire building over to air conditioning in the spring and heating in the fall. This seems to be standard in older buildings, but the Foxwood HVAC system is pretty much the worst one I've encountered. I could never get my apartment cool enough in the summer, and the worst part was that my apartment was always way too hot in the fall and winter. (I'm one of those people that is always cold, so that's saying something.) I almost never turned the heat on in my apartment, and even when it was 30 degrees out, I had to sleep with a window cracked. Also, unlike other apartments on the old HVAC system, you pay utilities at Foxwood Place. For some charges, you end up paying your portion of the entire building's use based on the square footage of your apartment. Not a big deal, just annoying.
- Neighborhood is not the greatest. There's a jail on one side and subsidized housing on the other. I never felt unsafe, but there were some car break-ins while I was there, someone was shot and killed outside the jail, etc.
- Visitor parking was not a problem when I first moved in, but the current leasing company implemented a new visitor parking policy. There are basically about 20 visitor spots for the entire building, and my friends sometimes couldn't find parking on the weekends. Street parking is not always available on the weekends, either.
- Finally, I don't think this will be a permanent problem, but for this entire winter (December 2008 - March 2009), I NEVER HAD HOT WATER IN THE MORNING!!! If I woke up early enough, it would be lukewarm, but if I woke up after 6:30 AM, it was cold to room temperature. I think they were having boiler problems - I saw a repair truck a couple of times.

So, my summary: You can do better for your money. The renovations didn't change the apartment size, heating/cooling issues, or any of the other drawbacks. There are apartments in area that have individual HVAC systems, more square footage, and hot water in the morning for less money. I couldn't justify staying at Foxwood Place, and I can't really justify recommending it anyone, either.

Having lived in Foxwood for 2 years (and moved out in August 2008, not long after the new leasing company took over), I can say this is a very good accurate review overall. A few things I would disagree with though: (1) Personally I think the neighborhood is perfectly safe, unless you enjoy wandering around neighborhoods at 2:00 AM. The "jail" is actually a juvenile hall I think, which was NEVER a problem because there are cops around, and if anything the troublemakers tend to stay away from there, obviously; (2) You must've had a crappy spot in the building, b/c I always thought the water temperature was perfectly fine. Beyond that, great review and fair assessment of things. This place is average at best, but definitely not the worst place I've seen.
